I'm not sure what black key you're referring to. My '03 Freedom Edition (I see that's what you have) came with fat grey keys, as all '02-04 KJs did. In 2005 Jeep changed the keys and they use different chips, so If you order new keys from eBay or something similar make sure they are not for an '05 or later. The fat keys have chips. You need two chipped keys to program an additional, otherwise you must take it to the dealer. Additional keyless entry remotes can be programmed if you have at least one remote. |

my 03 has a black key, no chip, standard ovalish round black plastic gripper with a key fob remote sounds like you'd need a key cut, then a fob programmed |

if the vehicle operates for more than a few seconds with the new key you had cut then there's no chip for the key fob quote from another thread TexasRock wrote: See if this helps.... ![]() Programming a new keyless entry remote To begin, you will need an existing (WORKING) remote, and the new remote(s) you want to program. Press (LOCK) button 5 times at 2 second Intervals to resynchronize transmitter, Attempt to function transmitter, If working as designed discontinue programming. Turn ignition to run position, (Allow Ignition chimes to stop). Using any original (working )transmitter, press the [UNLOCK] button for 4 to 10 seconds. Within the specified 4 to l0 seconds, continue pressing the [UNLOCK] button and press the [PANIC] button for 1 second and release both buttons. A chime will sound to indicate that the transmitter programming mode has been entered (allow 3 seconds for chime to sound). Press [LOCK] and [UNLOCK] buttons simultaneously for 1 second and release. Press and release any button an the same transmitter and a chime will sound after successfully programming the transmitter. Repeat steps 5 through 6 to program additional transmitters. Turn ignition to OFF position. Transmitter programming mode will discontinue after 60 seconds. (All transmitter programming must be completed within time specified). NOTE If equipped with VTSS, the system must be disarmed and/or unlocked to enter program mode. Warning: Simultaneous programming of multiple vehicles should be avoided as any transmitter activated within 30 meters (100 feet) can get programmed and may result in cross-vehicle programming. Part Number for remote: 04602260AA however tjkj said in that thread that fobs from different year spans won't work together / communicate correctly with the vehicle |

Sorry, I missed a couple words in my post... I meant to say all '02-04 KJs with factory alarms have the grey chipped keys. I was under the impression that all Freedom Editions came with the alarm. |
