Post subject:  Would you want a rear bumper WITHOUT a heavy tire carrier?

As many of you know I'm currently working on a rear bumper design. One area where I'm having an issue is maintaining clearance for the stock tire mounting. In order to simplify and strengthen the design, as well as providing better aesthetics, I'm contemplating making the swing out tire carrier a standard required part of the design. The stock tire carrier is just too low and requires jacking with the bumper to allow its use.

These prices are hypothetical: If you were in the market for a high quality rear bumper setup, would you prefer to spend $800 for just the rear bumper with lights and recovery points, or would you spend $1200 for a fully loaded bumper with a swing-out arm equipped with a high-clearance spare tire carrier, jerry-can & hi-lift mounts? The jerry-can and hi-lift mounts could be opted out for a small savings.

I just hate to make the fully loaded bumper design less awesome, to accomodate an option that maybe nobody would want. Your opinions and votes would be greatly appreciated.

+1 on your tire carrier vote as I would have purchased a bumper with a tire carrier had one been available before I went with the TR

Sorry Boiler
BUT Not sure how you could say you wanted to buy one without seeing it before. I know some will jump in and say yes but I like to see things first.
Do you have anything fully drawn up yet?

Nope, not fully drawn up, considering I'm still working out details, hence the thread.

Just pretend you really like a bumper and plan to buy it. Do you go with the $800 recovery bumper, or the $1200 fully loaded recovery bumper with tire carrier and other mounts? I'm not asking for preorders...I'm asking what kind of bumper people would be looking for. Oh, and for arguments sake, pretend it is steel and that ARB is selling it. That help? :-)r

Would love to hear some thoughts from those that would not want a tire carrier.

if it didn't have a tire carrier, it would have to have somethin else other than the bumper and a hitch to bite my interests

recessed aux backup light holes.. either external or internal to the bumper, plus the hitch

are tail light guards an option?

I hadn't planned on light guards.

roger that!

wasnt sure what manner you planned to hang the tire carrier, often some manu's use part of the tail light guard tubing to become function of the high anchor point for the carrier

I like the rear tire on the KJ where it's already at. So no, I wouldn't want the tire carrier. Also, I hope you could come up with something more in the $500 range for the rear. I do like the idea of recessed aux backup light holes.

:ROTFL: You're funny I hear Conan is looking for someone to hang out with.
Arguments sake, doesn't matter who makes it and want its made of. Over the last 35 years I have seen a lot of companies/people come out with bumpers, some were good and some really looked bad after they were done. So who makes it does not matter at all.
What would I want? Well with a tire rack ( sort of ) looks cool to me its a huge PITA. I use the rear of any vehicle I own and the extra time it takes to open, the rattles with ill made ones over time etc is not worth it.

If I were in the market, a bumper with a rear tire carrier that worked & did not detract from departure angle would interest me.

A carrier should improve it as it will raise the tire up.

The factory carrier can be flipped over to provide additional clearance as long as you're not going REALLY big (in which case, you probably have the tire on a roof rack or something to keep the weight off the tail end).

I'm for no carrier. Not that I don't think both would be cool, but it would just bug me always having to open TWO things for getting in the back on those normal mundane trips, like to the grocery store.
