Ok so I changed my oil today and it came out pretty much like liquid coal. I've thought it was dirty in the past but just figured it was normal...

I've owned the jeep for 18,000 miles, and this is my 7th oil change with mobil 1 and a mobil 1 filter. I stopped and thought about it tonight and I'm thinking it should come out cleaner with that oil and only 3,000 miles. Am I wrong? The dirty is obviously on the left, with clean on the right.

Um

my oil hasn't looked that black since i switched over

the first oil change after switching i ran it the usual 3000, changed the oil and filter and have since changed at 5500-6500 and it's 5k+ before it even starts to show darkening

I would say my oil still shows as clean within reason as the oil on the right, right now at 4500

I would expect it to not look as dirty as it does. There is no way I'd do an extended interval with that oil in there. In fact I'm tempted to change it again at 1k and see what it looks like. Actually I just hit 2750 miles from when I was supposed to change it last, and I believe I was a couple hundred miles late last time, so probably 2600 or so...

Oil gets dirty, period
Not a huge deal. There is no way that the oil you put in comes out the same color, wear on the engine, dirt in there etc
If you are afraid its bad send it in to get an analysis done on it

One other question Boiler
How many oil changes have you done in your life? Just curious?

Ditto. If you think there is a problem causing the oil to be dirtier than normal then have it tested. The test will tell you the oil condition and may reveal problems that are brewing. Hows your air filter seal? I've never seen any oil look "clean" after even a couple thousand miles even w/ synthetics.

Hey don't complain, the oil is apparently doing it's job well. I'd be concerned if it came out clean.

Maybe the Mobil 1 oil filter isn't doing such a good job.

I am running mobil 1 5w30 EP for 6 mos. and about 5k miles. Mine was very dark as well. I just changed it and within a week it was dirty again. I think the mobil 1 has very good detergents and that is just the nature of the beast....

WOW you guys are really obsessing to me I have never seen oil that isn't black or near the color of very dark chocolate come out of an engine even after only 3000 miles. that so called dirty oil looks great to me compaired to what comes out of mine.

If You really want to see Black oil you need to see what the Shell Rotella T6 looks like after its been in my CRD for the 6000 mile inerval. Its Blacker than the ace of spades and it starts to turn that way as soon as you begin drive with it in.

Guess I overanalyze. I've been trying to find something wrong with this jeep since I bought it. It never really gave me a 2nd thought on past changes, but this time I was thinking "wait, some people run this for 2-3000 miles more than I just did?"

Before the jeep it has probably been 18 years since I changed oil, sad to say, and back then it could've came out blue and I wouldn't have blinked.

Things bug me or I have a question, I ask. I'm not afraid to have people publicly flog me for asking a stupid question. Better safe than sorry.

I change the oil once per year in all my vehicles. I average about 7,000 miles per year on my Jeep Liberty. Right now I'm at 2,200 miles on my Jeep Cherokee after about 6 months of use. And I'm averaging about 14,000 miles per year on my Dodge Ram Cummins diesel. The UOA on my truck always comes back good. I just sent off an UOA on my Jeep Cherokee because I bought it used with 167,000 miles on it and was curious what the engine oil would reveal. I’m going to pull an UOA on the Jeep Liberty as soon as I hit 7,000 miles this year. I will say that my oil in my Liberty looks cleaner at 7,000 miles than your oil does at 3,000 miles. I run the Amsoil 0W20 and Amsoil filter. However, the “look” of oil doesn’t tell you the truth about the condition of the oil or the interval in which it should be changed.
