Over the last month or so I have posted a few topics regarding my engine knocking/loud ticking problem, well I finally got around to pulling the engine to investigate, So we got the engine out yesterday first we pulled out all the lifters and replaced with new ones since i had them, the ones we pulled out didn't seem bad still fairly stiff. after that we took the oil pan off to take a good look at the Rod bearings we removed all the bearing caps and inspected them and they are all fine, also checked for wrist pin play and nothing, we were spinning the engine over with the flex plate and you could hear this ticking or slapping sound every one revolution but couldn't find it anywhere bottom or top end, so then we took of the timing chain cover and both timing chain tensioners were pooping and making a pretty loud slapping/ticking noise... don't seem very right at all. i took them out and you can depress the little piston down squeezing it with my thumb, so i went to jeep and showed them and they said that they should not do that at all and that there's a check valve or something like that in there , that will keep them very stiff, so stiff that you need a vise to collapse them, so they got me pretty set on that we found the problem but who knows

Anyone have any incite on the matter or info they would like to add ?

So right now were just waiting on parts to put it back together


By the way the 3.7 was not bad at all to pull about 4 hrs and it was out with myself a aviation mechanic and the brother in law who is a vehicle mechanic

I have absolutely nothing helpful to add to this discussion, but I think your write-up may help someone else who may experience the same problem. How many miles do you have on your engine?

Its a 02 3.7 With 89000KMs, Yah we are stumped as well I really don't want to put the engine back in and have the same issue, the sound seemed to be coming from the aft of the engine so i don' entirely believe that the 2 tensioners are the problem

here is a lil more info on the sound that it was making, It never went away at all while the vehicle was running, its a constant sound that gos with the engine Revs, you can even hear it inside the vehicle while driving around under 65 km/h once you start getting up there in speed "highway driving" the air movement/road noise takes over and drowns out the sound, if i was parked then put it in gear "drive or reverse" the sound would get quieter then once back in neutral or park it would pick back up, also if i was in gear holding the brake and giving it gas to put load on the engine you would hear it pretty loud, also the sound doesn't change to much when the engine is cold or warmed up. once warm though if i rev the engine up a lil when the rpms are coming down the ticking gets hi pitch till its at normal idle rpm

the money is adding up around $600 or so now
I have replaced all 12 lifters/lash adjusters
need exhaust clamps and donuts
a bunch of seals
oil pan gasket
2 timing chain tensioners
also the fluids and oil filter


I'm ready to drive this thing in too a pole... so frustrating


What are the odds that it could have something to do with the tranny?

Everyone has their own method of dealing with engine issues, but I would have bought a crate motor with a warranty and called it good.

what you're describing def. goes along with the final diagnosis, change in torque loads (brake + gas) will make the chains try to slap around which is part of the duty of the tensioners

i originally was going to pull a jasper crate for mine when redoing the valves, pistons and cams and turned tail pretty quick when was quoted a price

naturally when you have the time, help/ability to do it you can typically fix/tweak it 4 or 5 times for the price of a new stock crate

just make sure you seal the timing chain cover good, i fudged a spot or two and it's seeping :roll:

I just priced out a Jasper remanufactured engine for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee, the price came to $1,927 which includes a 100,000 mile or 3 year warranty. What’s the cost for a Jasper remanufactured 3.7?

well we found a used engine for 1200.00 so swapping is not out of the question just yet, but like i said before all the major components of the engine seem/look fine so why get a new or used engine, I'm trying to spend as little money as possible so if theres no need for another engine why get one

It depends on how you look at it. I think $2,000 - 2,500 for a new motor (with warranty) is cheap and the downtime would be minimal.

So what I take away from this is two highly experienced mechanics can pull the engine in 4 hours. :jester:

What do you estimate one network engineer with a screwdriver, some bits of rubber hose and AC-Delco socket set can do? :?

My 2 cents on this would be "nothing to do with the tranny" if it's sitting in neutral and changes with the RPM's.

I too would like to see a solution to this issue.

My wife's 05' Liberty w/40k miles rattles real bad on engine start up (after sitting over night). The engine ticks pretty much all the time now.

We bought it new and wondering if it's still covered under the Drivetrain Warranty.

How do we find out ?

You may have thought of this already, but that "loud rattle on start-up" can often be an issue with your oil filter. Frams, for some reason, have a rep. for this in some applications. Just a thought

the timing chain tensioners use engine oil pressure to keep it tight ,,, if you look at without oil pressure , you think they are bad . :shock: what was the oil pressure ?,, did you replace the pump? was the sound from the top end or bottom , fast and sharp tick or more of a slow knock? it is possible that the timing chain is stretched to the point that the adjusters are all the way out .


now if your ready for this ,,, :D pull the flywheel off and look at the flex plate cover.... see any marks where it was rubbing?

i have seen quite a few wranglers get hot ( trans fliud ) and cause the torque converter to swell and push the flywheel into the flexplate.
