| Post subject: | Strange noise/vibes coming from the jeep.[with video/audio] |
Started last night on the way to work. It was fine and dandy until I was about a mile or two away from work. Best I can describe it is it sounds kinda like a cell phone vibrating loudly. I can feel it on the floorboard with me feet. Its not the shafts, diff, t-case, or tranny because it was doing it while I was parked. I shifted through each gear and it still did it. It did it again this morning, when I was about a mile or two away from my house. So it starts doing it after 5-6 miles of driving at 45-60mph. It likes to start making the noise when slowing down and speeding up, and every once in a while while just cruising. Anyone have any idea's on what this could be? Where it could be coming from? What should I look for and where should I look?? |

I would place my bet on the exhaust, maybe a heat shield finally rusting off and shifting around. Or the exhaust has gotten tweeked a little and has shifted allowing it to rub up on something giving you the vibration you feel. You can get weird noises too when it's just cold or maybe only when it's hot and the metal expands, etc. |

I doubt that. It does it while sitting still as well. So nothing should be getting shaken around, should it? |

Your engine vibrates doesn't it? It is connected to the exhaust. Unless your engine is off...is your engine off? If so I'd check for critters... |

It doesn't make the noise when I'm revving the engine, exhaust doesn't move when revving. I went to drive it around to remake the noise and it started making the noise once I put it i reverse. I put in all the other gears and it didn't do it except in reverse. Its just confusing me. |

Bad u-joints... easy/cheap to change so change 'em. More expensive when they fail due to possible collateral damage. |

JL and Bub, it's none of the things you mentioned. It does it while it's not moving. |

Auto. I dropped it in reverse and it started making the noise, put it into all the other gears and it didn't make it. Last night it did it in every gear. ATF is fine, no leaks. Drives and shifts normal. |

If your u-joints are making noises when the vehicle is still, they're really effed-up. |

It is the left side exhaust pipe where it crosses the trans skid. PDB. |
