I had the rear pinon seal and rack bushing replaced today at the stealership. Parts = $59.97 Labor = $500.35! Total with tax & misc. came to $615.14. Do you know what hit the fan when I got home!?

Sounds about right for the labor involved.

Geez you all get bent out of shape, don't like it do it yourself and see why the labor cost is high.

I hope that rack bushing was 90% of the labor because a pinion seal is a 30 minute job for anyone with mechanical knowledge.

A better way to approach her is to let her know how much it would have cost just a little longer running on them defective components if the repairs were not made now. Just don't blab out how much ya spent now, throw her the figure of a rear end and a rack replacement first then let her know how much money you saved :jester:

I knew the labor was going to kill me on the front end work but it had to be done. That was 4.6 hours of labor. One hour for the rear seal.

This is why I am appreciative of my current gig; I only have to pay $16.50 per labor hour. I tried to pay them in Mountain Dew but it doesn't fly here.

0.9 hours for the plug change, average about $100 per hour for labor. Then you got the plugs and your not getting autozone prices, sorry it don't work that way. Then finally you got tax and shop fee's(waste and anti-seize used and all those things). So $160 is right on track for a plug change in a KJ/KK with the 3.7.

Try having a 5.7 HEMI,it's 2.2 hours labor and have to buy 16 spark plugs,$500+ easy at any shop.Or try having a F body Camaro with the 350 V8,looking at like 5.8 hours labor.I could go on and on with vehicles that have a $500+ plug changes so a measly $160 is a bargin.

The labor amount sounds reasonable. Last week I had an axle seal and the pinion seal replaced in my front axle at my local dealership. Luckily I was able to get it covered by my Powertrain warranty because the mechanic had a great deal of trouble getting my front skid plate off  The total job including an oils & filter change took over four hours.

But one other time I took it in for a routine oil & filter change and while there they convinced me I needed a transmission flush plus new fluid & filter. It wound up costing me $640

You haven't learned "the way", Grasshopper.

Next time, tell her how much money you saved.

Seriously man. People get really bent when they see the bill. Most of this stuff can be done easy at home if you have the correct tools and know how and time to do it.

If I was physically able to do it myself I would have. I wasn't crying about the amount, just surprised by it.
