hey all.... is there a cleaner/more secure way to transport 7 foot (1) piece fishing poles on factory roof bars than 4" pvc pipe with clamps?... longer road trip planned over the 4th of july in 09 liberty sport... pics would be awesome but all advice is welcome. thanks in advance. |

Honestly hadn't thought of keeping them verticle like that first example.... am leaning towards making a tube of pvc with a removable end... using 1/2 or 3/4 inch pipe wrap to prevent vibration damage around individual poles and stowing it on top of a rail in the tube... reels off. Of course a little paint may keep it neater. Gotta admit though... the bumper mntd holder would work great for spring and fall surf fishing here on lake michigan... sit in the cab on a cold blustery day and watch the poles...  (might have to build that removable option into my bumper when I get that all planned out) thanks guys.... will post pics soon of prototype...

aye... suppose I could run with poles inside... but 300 miles 1 way with poles slapping my head?.... rather put em on top... (6.5-7 foot long St. Croixs and my 5' ultra-lite flueger) carefully...... safely.... on my way to local builders supply now.... PS (around town here I do carry them inside the cab or on the boat)... hopefully have the new gps by the time we go ..... ordered a Garmin Oregon 450 today..... looks sweet! the nuvi 1300 was a let down... really didn't care for the lack of plotting.... if I drive it... I want it to show up and be storeable/downloadable later. |

I use a St. Croix rod as well. Fantastic poles! I bought the 2-piece for just this reason though. |

When I go fishing I always have at least two 7' poles, usually just take everything I have just in case. What I do is run a strap across to each oh siht handle in the back seat. Make it tight to hold up the poles but not tight enough to rip the handles off. With the pole put in through the rear glass and the tip bent over a little they dont really move around much at all. I like doing this cause they are out of the element, I dont have a retarded tube sticking off the top of my Jeep and its only temporary. I suppose if I wanted to make it more permanent I could leave the strap.

Two piece rods are convenient for transporting in small vehicles, but I hate the way they feel with that stiff section right in the middle. Between the rods I've built myself, and the one's I've purchased not one of them is a sectional rod, and that includes my 10' & 11' surf casting poles. If you have roof rack cross bars like the Thule's, you can stack a ski rack on top of them, this gives you enough elevation to strap your rods in them with the reels still connected. With the rods laying horizontal...(pointing into the wind)....they rarely if ever bend or suffer any road damage, especially when you put them in the ski rack with the butt end toward the front. If you stuff them into a section of pipe....(I'm assuming PVC)....you have to wrap them with foam or bubble wrap as they will bang around inside the tube..... |

my thoughts exactly surfguitar......top mounting a single tube and wrapping the poles for safety... I too favor the single piece rod, now I wouldn't want this tube on all the time due to the cosmetics... but a family vacation requires some ingenuity in order to take some extra toys... |

The tube will provide the ultimate in highway protection for a long ride... Schedule #40 PVC pipe (in whatever diameter you need), an end cap glued on one end, a female threaded adapter with a threaded cap for the other end, a couple of thin rubber pads to prevent chafing on the roof, and a couple of large hose clamps that'll wrap around the tube and your roof rails. If you're packing several rods, just make sure the tube is big enough to accommodate all the rods, plus space for foam or bubble wrap. I would pack the rods staggered butt to tip, and roll them in one big sheet of wrap......

that could be a pretty slick way to transport locally, the clamps look slick. I keep leaning towards the top mount pvc tube..... gives the poles a little protection against any obstacles when off the main roads....
