hi there, im new to the discussion board but im hoping someone can shed some light on my problem. my 2002 plate 3.7 cherokee (55000m)has started overheating, today being the worst its been. the gauge gose up to 3/4 and up to red a couple of times forcing me to stop and let it cool down.it did this a couple of weeks ago but has been fine since. i cant see no leaks, when i lift the hood with the engine still running the fan is turning, when i switch the engine off the fan stops,i thort the fan kept turning untill the temp had gone down, the wireing seams ok as far as i can see, but wondered if theres a common problem part that fails on this model. any help on the matter would be great. thanks. iv heard about an air lock problem! any thorts and how do you get rid of it?

Are you talking about a Liberty (KJ) or Cherokee (XJ) here in the USA "late" 2002 model or an overseas model 2002 Cherokee (Liberty - KJ)?

Without more details ( & with the XJ not getting the 3.7L + the fact that we rarley use KM's here) I would guess his water pump is failing. Very similar to the conditions when my 3.7L waterpump failed at 17.5k miles/28K km's.

Best thing to start with is a thorough cleaning of the radiator. Start with making sure your thermostat and water pump are good. Remember to not let your vehicle get to hot, doing so over and over again will blow a head gasket or warp your head. Keep an eye out for milky looking oil.
