| Post subject: | Engine swap help |
So the engine locked up and my mechanic and I are in the process of looking for new motors. He can find some motors but most are in the $2k range and most have warranties. I read the Powertech 4.7L V8 will fit right in? I am thinking they might be easier to find. If so what additional modding/work would my mechanic have to do to get this engine in? One other thing, I know the 04+ engines are different I believe 02 and 03 are the same? Correct me if im wrong. Also someone had posted a link to a website which had engines, cannot find it so if you have it post it again please. Thanks |

One thing to think about if you are PAYING someone else to do it stock motor will drop right in and will hook up to all wiring etc. Paying someone to install a different engine, measuring, fitting, wiring will take lots more hours and time so how deep are your pockets before you go any further and is this your daily driver ???? For stock motor Check with David at Daveys Jeeps, he has one for 1200 with 89,000 miles |

if your payin someone else to do it, i'd stick with a new or reman from jasper or someone reputable unless you can lock the shop to a specific estimate for the swap to a 4.7 |

Since it will be the first 4.7 swap everything will be custom installed ( read $$$$$$). I am going to be in to mine at LEAST 3K (maybe a little more before it actually hits pavement) doing it myself with used and bartered parts and it's about 3 mos in and only 1/2 done so far. So much for your DD! |

My recollection of the difference is that the number of teeth on the tone rings differ between 03 and 04.....or something along those lines that couldn't be worked out. |

So, has there been any progress with your project? I'm mulling a 4.7 swap myself, and I'd like to hear your experience so far. From what I can gather, everything can be done with a mishmosh of OEM components from various vehicles (I'd need to pull from a Dakota, since I have a 5 speed...), but I've never seen the whole receipe laid out in one place... |

Youll need a new transmission most likely. The 42rle is apparently not compatible, as well as I wouldnt want to use it with a more powerful v8. |

How is the 42rle not compatable with the 4.7? Are you referring to torque capacity, or something else? |

venturaII wrote: How is the 42rle not compatable with the 4.7? Are you referring to torque capacity, or something else? Torque capacity. The 2nd # in newer Chrysler auto trans is the torque rating from 1-10,and 1 is the weakest and 10 being the strongest. So the 42RLE has a 2 rating were as the 45RFE has a 5 rating. |

But how does that rating correlate to the actual engine output numbers? The 42rle still might be overrated for the 3.7, even though it's rated weaker than the 45rfe....(in theory, at least...) |
