Rear passenger window problem

Yesterday accidentally rolled down my rear passenger window a little (I'm a bachalor so I don't normally roll down the rear windows). I go to press the switch to roll it up and I here what sounds like a highly muffled semi-automatic rifle. I searched the forums and it seems like the window regulator is a common problem in the Libby. I saw that people are suggesting the Steiger kit. My question is that I read the description on their website and it says "As you use the window, the part of the plastic bracket that rides inside the metal guide rail tends to wear away until it becomes too thin to support the weight of the window, at which point it snaps and down comes the glass!" My question is that my window didn't fall down all the way. It only will fall down a couple of inches. I can manually move the window back up with my hands and it stays in place until the vibrations from driving make it fall back down a couple of inches. Is this the norm for people with the regulator issue? I'm a total novice when it comes mechanical things but based on the kit it doesn't look like it's that big of a deal. Just looks like it just requires an Allen wrench. For people that have used the Steiger kit, how easy/hard is the installation?

I had the same problem last week on my rear driver side... the semi-auto rifle sound scared me at first too!!

Basically, you need to take off the door panel, remove the glass, center rail/guide, and the motor too. took me about 30mins or so, but if i had to do it again, i'd have it out in 10-15 or less i think. it's not that bad, just take it slow. I did NOT read the instructions on STEIGER website prior to removal, if you do, it might go faster for you. i then proceeded to order the correct replacement from steiger. looks like a nice piece, and most fellows on here have had good luck with it to. Just make sure you follow his instructions to make sure you order the correct piece for your vehicle, there are a few differences

mine should be here today i'm hoping... i'll update this thread for you when i install mine either tonight or tomorrow i'm hoping. good luck until then!!

also, there are some more threads in here with people with same issues... if you want more info, i'll sure you'll find it here. I'm new here but have found LOTS of help so far.

Anyone have any temporary fixes until I can order the kit? I'm going on a business trip tomorrow and it's suppose to rain. I'm thinking about just pulling the window up and duct taping it to my ceiling. Anyone have a better suggestion?

Duct Tape leaves a nasty residue usually... try a sign shop and get some scrap vinyl of theirs, it won't leave a mess when removed. (i'd give you some, but that's a long drive for you!ha) but ducttape will work, just use a soft towel and some OOPS Residue Remover if needed when you remove the ducttape if it leaves some residue.. (let it soak in for 30 seconds before wiping off)

or, you could go through the hassle of taking off door panel and rigging up an internal bracket to keep that window up. Personally, i'd go ducttape/vinyl for a few days!

thankfully, we have a few extra cars laying around, i just parked my jeep for the week.

dont do tape....remove the door panel, and tie a zip tie around the "dummy" window track and up underneath the window....mines been like that for 4 months now. i have 3 kids back there and they dont need the windows down

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately I live alone in a new town where I don't know anyone and only have the Libby for transportation (it's getting a little too cold for the mountain bike!). I think I'm gonna go ahead and order the Steiger kit and hopefully I'll be able to fix it myself without breaking it any further and having to go to the demon$hip.

@4x4kayak2112 - That sounds perfect for me. I would love to do this so that I can buy the kit and get help installing from my mechanically inclined father when I see him at Thanksgiving. I do have a few questions. I'm looking at the door pictures that Steiger has on it's site for his fix ( http://www.steigerperformance.com/docs/ ... ctions.pdf )...I'm not recognizing what your speaking of when you say tie around the 'dummy' window track and underneath the window. Do you think you could dum it down for me a bit and maybe give me some reference based on the figures in the pictures from Steiger's site?

I have a totally different problem on my rear pass window on my 05 Libby. The window went down but will not go back up, I had to pull the door panel, get to the motor and reverse the wiring to make the window go up. I changed both switches but it does the same thing....goes down but will not go back up.. :?:

Don't know if I have a electrical problem

I noticed in your signature that yours is an '07. If you didn't by it new or don't know for sure if the regulator has been replaced by the dealership, you might want to pop the door panel off to verify that it's the original '07 style. If the dealer replaced it, it would have been with an '06 style regulator (and window) which is different. I bought my '07 with just over 9K miles on it and one regulator had already been replaced with an older style part.

Steiger's replacement parts, directions, and customer service are TOP NOTCH.

free regulator replacement for the upper years has been confirmed on several cases - however be aware the dealer may headache you about it

advise them that you received the information from Jeep that Jeep knows about the issue and instead of doing recalls they are replacing the parts / labor for free, and that the dealer itself needs to contact Jeep and have Jeep create a ticket on it

may take 24hrs for the process to occur

I just installed my rear Steiger kit (driverside). for the most part, piece of cake!!! I had already taken the window and entire motor & center guide out last week before finding the steiger kit & instructions... by taking out the entire motor /center rail, i did NOT have to take apart the motor as the steiger directions say to do. I was able to simply remove the plastic bracket from the center rail while on my workbench, attach the new "regulator" at the end of the slide-screw, and reinstall. Instead of taking that slide-screw all the way out of the motor and housing.

For some, taking the entire motor/center rail out might be more work, for me i figure it was about the same had i left it in but needed to disassemble the motor as explained in the steiger directions... but since it was already done, no big deal.

works just like it should now!!

I took the time to install some component speakers into that rear door during this time of non-use anyways.... i got a little carried away with that project, and will be starting an entire thread devoted to what that component speaker install started! ha.

anyways, good luck with your install. not bad at all. mostly common sense on everything.

I bought some rubber door stops ( The wedge type ) and wedged them down between the window and the door frame and they held till I replaced my regulators.

I got around to doing it this weekend. So far it has worked like a charm. It appears that they knew that it was going to happen so they placed holes in the perfect spot for the zip tie to hold the window track up. Thanks again 4x4kayak2112!
