Post subject:  Roof basket without crossbars
Hello guys/gals,
Im looking for a roof basket that can be used without the cross bars. I found that there is a wider Surco one posted by a member that is an option. I have a 2006 renegade though and was worried that my roof rails would be too wide for the mounting brackets. Can someone give me some advice?

The surco comes with cross bars and all you need is $10 worth of u bolts and you can mount it to the side rails.

The ORU Defender rack works also without crossbars,just 4 u-bolts to attach to roof rails.

This one is the best fit...................

that's a nice looking piece right there!!! too bad when i clicked BUY IT NOW the next page was not found. bummer. i really like it. on a side note, how much $$??? i assume that info would have been on the next page that wasn't found.

i also really like that Defender one! really slick looking. I encountered the same problem though. When I clicked buy now the site crapped out

Found it on another site. Original price was around $550. It was lowered $100. Still too pricey for me. I'll probably go with the Surco one at some point

I got my Defender rack at 4 wheel parts,paid $400 whne I bought it 4 some years ago.Very high grade rack,well built.

sorry if this is a double post but i hadn't seen where anyone had mentioned the mopar roof basket. They make one that is very similar to the SportRack roof basket, actually as far as I can tell by the pictures its identical. Their is also an extension available that extends the basket 22" to cover most of the roof. It can attach to the factory side rails or the sport utility cross bars. Just make sure you order the correct basket, they don't ship both types of attachment hardware, you have to specify how you want to attach it, and crossbars are standard.

Anyone know which Surco Rack is the one that doesn't require the crossbars? I thought there was a wider one? The ones I found at Summit and a few other places say they require crossbars and adapters for $120 more. Also that Mopar one looks very nice but I was concerned it would not fit the Renegade rails.

I have a Surco Safari rack. I bought it several years ago, I'm pretty sure via the following URL:

I bought all the KJ Liberty adapters, which included some cross bars. I'm surprised to read it's only 5 in tall, it seems taller. One nice thing about the Surco rack is the weight: it's made out of aluminum. I kind of wish I had gotten the "floor kit", which adds more floor slats. I think I felt like I had already spent enough money.

I can't leave mine on all the time, as the spare tire carrier rod brushes against the bottom of the open garage door. Guess what happens when you forget to take your spare wheel off and drive into the garage. :banghead:

It's a good rack, but with the mounting and other accessories (tire carrier, jack carrier) it was not cheap.

Looking at their application guide (http://www.everythingsuv.com/surco_safari_roof_racksappchart-esuv.asp), I think I got the Surco 1101 Clamp Mount adapters, which are $129. Maybe there's a cheaper way to do it.

The surco comes with crossbars and they are a huge part of the strength of the rack. I used ~$10 worth of u bolts frm a local harware store to mount it. If you have sport rails its easy to mount and you'll love it. I have had mine for about a year and its worked great and saved m many times when I needed extra storage. Mine is the 45x50 I think. Oh and when you get the rack make sure you always have bungees and ratchet straps with you at all times as you'll never know when you will need the rack.

This is the 4x4x4 one piece welded rack. The current price is $415. Just thought you guys might to know.. Good lookin rack IMO
