Hi all, I'm new to the forum and am trying to research and learn as much as I can about my issue. But I've become concerned and impatient and would like some feedback as I'm not sure my repair is going well.
I've owned an '06 Liberty CRD Limited since birth. It is still stock and has just over 76k miles now and no issues really to speak much of until we did this past oil change. A few weeks ago my husband found oil around the turbo and also in the intake hose. I took it into the dealership (ok now I know, don't take it there) and they said the turbo failed. Also, system had oil in the: intercooler, throttle body and EGR. CEL had come on also just before finding this. Codes it threw according to dealership were: P299 = overboost, P610 = control module, P688 = ASD relay, P410 EGR min flow and P0093 Large leak detected. Extended warranty is only covering turbo, turbo gasket and diagnostics and said other parts can be cleaned. Chrysler recommended replacement so I went that route as much as that is hurting the pocket book. (I am keeping all the parts tho in attempts to get warranty to cover, but that's doubtful.)
Got a call that it was ready to come home last Tues. and said I'd be there Sat. to get it. Then Friday night get a call that they want to keep it longer. Seems they decided to drive it 25-30 miles to be sure everything was ok but they got a CEL at 27 miles and found the EGR was dirty. They cleaned it up and tried again and same results. Now I'll find out tomorrow what they mean by "dirty" and what codes it threw and if they made any progress over the weekend on understanding the latest issue.
In the meantime I started reading forums and am wondering if all this needed replacing. I haven't had it in for a few yrs now and will ask what recalls/PCM updates were last done as I don't remember (asked them not to do any at this time). I will ask if they cleaned the MAF/MAP/boost sensors.

Do you have any suggestions on what other questions I should be asking them? TIA

Sorry so long - I'm quite the talker/typer. I do plan to put a Provent on when I get it home to help in the future. And deleting the EGR... I've learned that much at least in reading this weekend.

Your CAC hose is split and your EGR valve needs replacing.... as far as the oil.... try to find a dealer who knows that KJ's once had a CRD option.

First of all Green Diesel Engineering is your best bet they strickly limit the EGRs activation. Plus better fuel economey and alot happier engine. Your only other choice is the SEGR these elminate the EGR completely and i am sure UFO or LOCOCRD have a few left. Both of these options are alot easier then pulling it and having to pipe around it. And a Provent or EHM is definitely in need asap. And as fas as the leak detection goes i am with JLRockies check your turbo to IC hose and IC to engine hose. These are the two most common problems. And find a dealership with a five star rating and a niche for the cummins and sprinter CRD vans they are your best bet for a diesel mechanic who will somewhat know about the CRDs.

Dealerships that sell/service Cummins/Sprinter at least tend to speak diesel - the 'talk to STAR' will have you replacing a lot of good parts.

or to clarify a bit - oil in the intercooler, intake and hoses are due to the design of the CCV system - that's not a failure - 'it's a feature'
also power loss tends to be CAC hoses -all of the originals fail - there are some new style ones out.

Thanks for the replys. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I've already had all these parts replaced(Turbo, throttle body, inter cooler and EGR) and the hoses related to them at the Chrysler dealership. I'm not sure what the CAC hose is? I don't see that specifically on the parts descriptions of what they replaced.
So from what I've read earlier on forums and what you're saying here I probably replaced good parts? Good thing I've kept the old ones! Guess I'll fight Chrysler on this one before I pick the Jeep up from them on why they recommended replacing parts that weren't bad.
But they feel there is still a problem with the NEW EGR, getting dirty after 25 miles. Again. I'll ask what their definition of "dirty' is and why they feel this is a problem. They are a 5star dealership and have had CRD's in before (and of course Cummins) but doesn't mean they know what they're doing on the Jeep. And thus why I'm asking you experts here on this forum.

the CAC is the Charged Air Cooler - the intercooler - even if you had oil in it that might change the efficiency a bit - but no one else has changed one unless the dealer was doing it under warranty.

The original EGR's did have plastic gears that tended to strip out, occasionally with the throttle valve (only used as part of the EGR cycle). - however the newer ones typically can be cleaned by soaking in solvent (I wouldn't expect a dealer to do that - but home mechanics do)

and you are correct a New EGR would not clog in 25 miles, even the bad ones lasted 25,000+.

the oil from the CCV (Closed Crankcase Ventilation) system blows into the intake just before the turbo and coats the entire system - eventually causing the hoses to fail. There is a new style hose that has a Silicon liner so it shouldn't fail.

However that means that oil in the intake is not a symptom of a problem (it does become a problem - due to the volume over time - but that fact that it's there - is normal)

There have been a couple of Turbo fails - but with the number of folks here - that's not a lot - however they have been catastrophic - the engine dumps most of it's oil in a few minutes and the lower end of the engine dies from lack of oil. The best ideas on this at the moment - are insure regular oil changes and make sure you do a cool down idle - if the engine's been running hard - highway or towing. (times are in the owners manual about 1-5 minutes)

so based on your original comments - I suspect the hoses were bad and probably the EGR or EGR/throttle valve combo.
I doubt the Turbo was bad - it would need clearances measured to confirm and if the only issue on the intercooler was oil - it can be cleaned.

and last but not least - you should probably post CRD questions over in the CRD section - a lot of the CRD folks only look over there.
most of the 4x4 folks are trying to maximize lift - without killing the CV joints (and even that is different for CRD's)
