Post subject: | 6 Speed Manual Questions..... |
I have a '05 Renegade with the 6 speed manual. It has around 35,000 miles on it. I purchased it back in October. Lately I have noticed that when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear, I feel a small clunk in the shifter, like it's not wanting to shift into 2nd. This problem seems to go away the longer I drive throughout the day. This is the first manual transmission vehicle I have owned, but I have several work trucks with manuals and never felt this problem. Could it be the colder weather, or do I need to change out the trans fluid? Maybe I worrying too much, but this doesn't seem normal. |

I would switch out the fluid. Penzoil synchromesh is the factory fluid and is pretty cheap. Personally, I like the royal purple synchromax, as it smoothed out the shifting for me. The clunking might be signs of an upcoming issue. Have you checked the fluid to see if it is low? |

Thanks for the info...After some searching, I ran into a few threads about using Royal Purple. Did you perform a complete flush, or just drain and fill? I haven't checked the level, plan on draining the fluid some evening this weekend. I shouldn't calling it really a clunking....more of a resistance going into second. It's a problem that has came up as the weather has gotten cold. Hoping the fluid change will help! |

There really isn't anything to flush. Just drain and refill. Just make sure to loosen the fill plug first. I found out that my fill plug was a different size and would have been screwed if I didn';t check first. Mine went into second a little "tight", but did smooth out with the royal purple. The amsoil synchromesh is supposed to be really good too. I think it is reported to be better in hot weather, while the royal purple does better in cold. However, the penzoil stuff is good too, and half the price. You may have to look around to get the right sockets to fit those plugs. |

Looks like I need a 14mm and 17mm allen? I will give this a try tomorrow night. I'm hoping O'Reilly's carries Royal Purple, if not I will go with Amsoil or Penzoil. Maybe the right word is "notchy" from 1st to 2nd? I'm probably worrying too much about this, but would like to get it figured out before it gets too cold out. Thanks for the help! |

I get my royal purple from pep boys if you have those where you live. Good luck! |
