Should I pick up an '09 Liberty Rocky Mountain Edition/'10 Liberty Renegade or wait for the new 3rd generation liberty coming out in 2012? I never buy new and don't trust the first model year so I would be looking at a 2013 model year purchased in 2014 (used). What do you guys think? Hold out for the 3rd generation liberty or pick up the best version of the current KK?

Lastest and from a site I'd trust more then any other about the '13 Liberty.

Quote:
Based on the D-evo (stretched C-evo) platform, this new model replaces the Liberty and could, but probably won’t, be called the Cherokee. (Editor’s note: This model would probably be a Jeep design using Fiat dimensions and basic architectures.)

I follow allpar as well, here is an entry regarding the 2013 Liberty.

Quote:
The next Jeep Liberty, said to look far more upscale and attractive, will use the same key dimensions as new D class (midsized) cars in model-year 2013 (CY 2012) — CUSW in other words. A more recent report confirmed the upscale appearance, saying, “It looks like a mix of the Compass and the Grand Cherokee. Very sleek and un-jeep like. The room sort of moaned when it was shown.”

The Liberty could be a “real Jeep” that just shares key dimensions with mid-sized cars and crossovers (most think we will get something that is not as off-road capable, but has a Trail Rated version, like Compass and Patriot). Rumor has the 3.2 V6 being used instead of the 3.6, presumably for gas mileage and (mainly) packaging reasons — a smaller engine could allow better wheel travel. The 3.2, though, isn’t due for production until 2013, according to some sources. A VM diesel is possible as Euro and US standards converge. Production will continue to be at Toledo.

Go for the current model. It's a good vehicle, and a capable off-roader. I had the pleasure of driving one on an offroad skills course. I prefer my KJ in many ways, but the KK does have more space in the boot. The next model may be an improvement, or it may not. There is an increasing trend with most manufacturers (including our own Land Rover)to focus SUVs on the onroad market - that being where most of the sales are, and to optimize the vehicle for that function, as research has shown that the VAST majority will NEVER be taken offroad. The thought is, that if you want real offroad capability, you'll buy a JK (or more likely a Defender if you're in Britain). The "hardcore" offroaders have been increasingly civilized in recent years, to offer decent onroad comfort but maintain good offroad ability, so the manufacturers don't really see why the SUV section of their lineup need to be good offroaders as well (at least in standard, unmodified form).
