Does anyone know what the width of the opening in the back door and the length to the driver seats with the back seats folded down with the gate closed? I dont drive my KJ as a daily driver, and need to know if I can fit a Double bed size boxspring and mattress or at least the mattress with the boxspring on the roof. I believe the mattress is 74" x 54".

I'm not near enough to my Jeep to measure, but the Edmunds lists the rear hiproom as 47.4". Fold the mattress a bit and...maybe. But length is going to get you. I think it'll be, at best, hanging out the glass.

I can't even dream of there being enough room to get a full-size box spring in there. Think roofrails and lots of peanut butter to keep it up there.

I would go into the situation with the proper tools to put both items on the roof (then it'll be a nice little plus if you can squeeze it into the inside. Good luck and...let us know if you CAN fit a boxspring in there!

Ok, now the real question is, how bad do you think my gas will suffer with just the boxspring on top?

I got a contrator at work that is moving, and the only thing other than a few suitcases of clothes that he needs to move from Sharon, PA to Columbia, SC is his box spring and mattress. U-Haul or the like want's $800 for him to use a truck (the smallest they have) one way (that will be a 5 day rental minimum they say). The plan was to put his little car (ford focus) on a tow dolly and tow it behind the KJ with either his car loaded with the clothes or the KJ with them and the mattress. He was going to pay for gas and food for me down and back and I would get a rear tow hitch out of it. We were thinking that it would probably be cheaper than him renting a Uhaul and tow dolly for this trip. What you guys think?

I would get some 2x4's, use ubolts to put them on the roof rack, and put the mattresses on the 2x4's. It will kill the mpg, and u better cover it up incase it rains or something.

If you do use a dolly, the braking will suck bad. Allow ALOT of room to stop and dont heat them up to much. Would be awful to wreck ur jeep and his car. it would also be better to put the cloths in the jeep, more weight in the jeep would help it tow better. Watch those yellow lights if it rains, dont lock the wheels up and die, I may need you some day.

You need to check with some other rental moving vehicle places. $800 is ridiculous. Though this was five years ago, prices couldn't have jumped that much. I rented a 27 ft moving truck and a tow dolly and moved from Paris, Texas to Denver Colorado and it cost me only about $400. That was 869 miles and doing it one way with the truck and dolly.

Try Ryder and some of the other companies.

I had a buddy of mine rented a 26ft Uhaul with a tow dolly from Charleston, SC to Cleveland, OH.. It cost him like $1200 plus gas.. The prices have gone way up on rental trucks... For $800, he could trash his mattress and box springs and just buy a new set when he arrives in South Carolina...

Just a thought, but unless he has a real fancy box spring, I say donate it to charity and replace it in Columbia. Unless he has one of those top of the line beds that cost in excess of $600 for the box springs alone, I think that would be your best bet. You can still probably get the mattress in the KJ so he only has to buy the new boxspring.

Well, if you're looking for a little road trip (I look for every road trip chance I can find since buying the KJ CRD :D ), I'd say do it! Sounds like a fun trip. I like the 2X4 box spring idea. Wrap it well in tarps and put it on the KJ. Put the Focus on the dolly, then wrap the mattress in tarps and lash it to the Focus. It'll cover almost the whole thing, but who cares. Wrap it well in tarps (or a cheap car cover) and lash it to the Focus with a bunch of nylon rope like a spider's web. It'll form fit over the car and you won't increase you're C.D. much more than the Focus alone would.

The box spring's going to eat your fuel mileages, but who cares...he's paying for it.

Make sure you get good working tail, brake and turn lights to put on the back of the rig!

Great advice from everyone about your towing strategies. Also good ideas on just donating the set and buying new at the destination...if you're not looking for a trip.

But, personally; Pay for food and fuel, give me a road map, and give me the time off work and I'll haul ya to Pluto. Just a good reason for a road trip and more stories to tell around the campfire. 8)

Good luck and keep us posted. Take some picts, I wanna see that rig after you get it all lashed down!!! That'll be GREAT!

I'm always looking for road trips myself. I'm not worried about taking the Half day off of work I would need for this trip. I was just looking to help a friend and also get a tow hitch out of it, which is a plus. If I end up doing this, I'll make sure to take some pictures and keep you guys posted. His last day is the end of March, so we still got time.
