Post subject:  Leaking Rear Dif

So after I made some adjustments to my UCA's I took my KJ for a spin and noticed a different noise/feel. I can't really describe it but it was something that was off. So, when I got home I crawled under and checked out the front and back. Low and behold I see this...
Image
Rear Dif, shaft is obviously the drive shaft, the leak appears to be on the top of the...pinion on the rear dif.
Looks like my rear seal is starting to go or has gone. This just started, I was under my jeep last week and it was bone dry. My questions are:
1-How long can it go on like this without major damage?

2-Will it cause major damage?

3-Can I repair this myself or do I need a garage for this one?

4-Will I need help repairing this?

5-If 3 is self and 4 is yes, who wants to help? I will provide beer and pizza :D

I'll help ya :ROTFL:
Not too bad to do, did 03CDKJs a few weeks back
Need a torque wrench which goes over 200

and they want to show me the "town"
so maybe coming out that way, but it will be a month or more

hmmm....Well when you come out this way you will have to let us know so if nothing else you and I can hit a trail or two. Taz might be interested too. Have to track him down though...he is a bit more elusive. LOL

well...I checked my torque wrench and it only goes up to 100 so guess I will be picking up a new one, lol. PITA. Oh well what can you do :)

You will need a torque wrench that measures in/lbs also. You also will need a torque wrench that can go up to at least 300lbs/ft or torque as the min torque for the pinion nut is 210lbs/ft but final torque is set by the rotational torque you measured before hand via the in/lbs torque wrench.

I am a bit confused. When I take off the pinion nut I use the torque wrench to get a reading so that when I put it back on I torque to the previous amount? :?:

Yep,you use the in/lbs torque wrench to get the rotational reading, remove pinion nut. When installing pinion nut torque to 210lbs-ft,check rotational torque with in/lbs wrench and torque a additional 5lbs-ft at a time until you get back to the same rotational torque then add 5lbs-ft after that and your set.

What are you guys using to lock down the pinion while you apply the 210 + lbs.-ft. of torque ?? Mine has the same problem as the OP.

What do you mean lock down?
If you mean keep it from turning I have a homegrown tool I made with 2- 3 foot long chucks of 1" x 1" metal bolted together , slide over the pinion and let it rest on the floor and away you go.

That's what I meant. I didn't want the rear pinion moving/flexing when applying the torque to get it all put back together correctly. Any idea on the size of that pinion nut ?? I didn't want to have to run back and forth to the parts store comparing socket sizes til I got it right.

Can't remember the size right off , you need to purchase a new nut anyways ( or you are suppose to)

1 1/8"(well my '02 was that size),and yes buy a new pinion nut as they are one time use.

Beat me to it!!
Just went out to the garage to double check the size
We did 03CDKJs a couple weeks back and no problem leak free and no vibs etc.

OK, if you guys say get a new pinion nut then a new pinion nut it is. Still need to rig up something to hold it still while I torque it down and pick up a bigger (300lbs.-ft.) and smaller (in-lbs.) torque wrench. Rev. mudd would you happen to have any pics of the tool you made to hold it while puttin' the torque to it ?? If so I'd just copy that and save myself some aggravation.

the in/lbs torque wrench is more a torque gauge, needle or arm style than it is a "wrench" or clicker

imagine a 1/2" drive needle gauge torque bar that's only about 7-8" long with a ball on the end to grab and as you turn the pinion the arm flexes to varying positions across the plate gauge

just didn't want you running out and getting a in/lbs clicker

they have them for bikes that have a compass looking gauge that resembles a diving watch face too as well as digitals but i've always found the needle driven to be cheaper cost wise and easier to read while it's moving

hope that helps

Thanks for the heads up on the torque wrench. Where might I find such a critter ?? most of the stores in my area carry the clicker type and not much else.
