Post subject:  Airbox elimination/snorkel

Building on an idea for dual batteries I got from Quinn at All J, I'm currently trying to engineer a way to remove the airbox from my 04 KJ and run the intake directly through the fender to a snorkel. My aim is to be able to use the space where the airbox was to add a second battery under the hood. I'm sure there are 'better' things I should spend my time, effort and money on; this is the project that is currently occupying my mind so... :dizzy:

Filtration. If I remove the airbox I remove the air filter and I know that is not good. Do any of you LOST members out there know of an 'in-line' type of filter that may be adaptable to this application?

I removed the airbox and studied under the hood of my KJ and it seems like I could bend an acordian type of duct from the intake tube leading from the throttle body, almost at a right angle, to the drivers side fender and through to a snorkel. I have yet to determine just where the Safari or ARB snorkel comes through the fender and into the engine compartment on a Liberty but the duct would have to meet up with it and form a good seal, ultimately.

The filter is a crucial part of the mod so I need to get all the (theoretical) parts lined up before deciding to do this project. Then there's the set up of the second battery which I am smart enough (and humble enough) to leave to the professionals at All J. :D

Thanks for all replies,
Mojave KJ aka Tony :JEEPIN:

The ARB/Safari Snorkel (they are 1 and the same) is mounted on the Passenger Side of the KJ not the drivers and it goes straight into the side of the airbox.

You're right, I meant the passenger side.

Straight into the airbox, hmmm... Well, I don't suppose you have the template used to mark the hole do you? That would be great to know exactly where it comes through.

Thanks tOnKaTrAcKeR for the great info.

no I don't have the templates anymore ... there were 3 templates just to drill through the fender/inner fender. But I have to take the airbox off of my KJ tomorrow so I can shoot a pic of the snorkel coming through the fender if that will help ya.

Yes please.

Thanks!

My reaction to this project is left of positive... There's rarely a good reason to install a 2nd battery and for the few valid reasons there are, I can't see the avantage to taking this route.

I run a lot of electrical/electronic stuff in my Jeep and want to add more. I see a second battery is a safety net, like carrying extra gas. I was advised by a professional who had done many dual battery installs on Jeeps to keep it all under the hood, so that's why I'm looking into this mod.

Thanks!

Hey JJ, if I can get things to line up it seems fairly do-able to me. The stock air box is yours if/when the project is finished.

Not sure if it would help the project but I have a k&n FIPK setup i'm getting rid off in near future, includes Amsoil cone air filter and sock cover but not sure if it would work for ya. Maybe we could work out a deal if you can use it.

I am about to add a second battery under the hood of our KJ
and make my own snorkel.
I have room at the passengers side fire wall for this air filter
assembly. No cruise control.
I have an assortment of elbows and HDPE sheet to fab the snorkel
itself.
Here is a link to the air box I am going to use.
