Has anyone ever attempted to change you tranny filter or service your transfer case on your own? I have all the tools you could think of, I just have never attempted anything with the drive train.

The tranny is just messy, but not hard. I paid to have mine done because I didn't want to mess with dropping the pan and resealing, etc.

The transfer case has a drain plug and fill hole. Pick up some ATF+4. Takes about 10 minutes (mostly just to find the right allen wrench).

I've done both the Transmission and Transfer Case. The TC is pretty straight forward. The transmission is a messy job, but pretty simple. (If I can do it, so can you  )

You need to get a LARGE oil pan.
You then loosen all the screws, but just a little.
Go to one side of the tranny case and take all the screws out of that side only. It's sealed with RTV, so it probably won't leak out.
Carefully pry that side open with a screwdirver and let the oil drain out the side as much as possible. Then remove the rest of the screws and drop the case.
There are actually 2 different filters in the transmission. One is a flat filter with some sort of mesh inside. The other looks very similar to an engine oil filter.
When you replace the filters, make sure they are properly seated, then seal the tranny with RTV and put the screws back in.
The fluid is added in the engine compartment. (Be careful not to overfill).

Remember to check it for leaks afterwards.

Hope this helps.

Not all trannys use 2 filters, the 42rle's use 1. 45 rfe uses 2.

Yeah I have the 45rfe, and the shop manual shows two filters, the main, and the bypass. My biggest worry is making a good seal with the liquid gasket crap. Why couldn't they had just made a preformed/precut gasket?

Its not that hard. Just dont over do it. Some people think more is better and its not with that. Put a nice even bead all the way around it and dont let it get a skin before you put it in. Its best to have 2 people, one putting the rtv on and the other under the jeep ready to bolt it up. It'll be fine.
