| Post subject: | Noise from Jeep :( .. Suggestions? |
Hey hey. There's a whomping noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear of the Jeep, but I'm not sure. It only does it when I first turn the Jeep on when it has been sitting a while. The noise gets faster when the Jeep is moving faster. When I press the brakes, the noise goes away. When I pull the E-Brake, the noise is still there. It appears that when I turn left, it gets quieter, when I turn right it gets louder. I don't think it is the CV, because it goes away after a while, and when I hit the brakes (even gently, not to slow the truck down) it goes away.. I'm thinking sticking brake pad?? I haven't been able to get out and check it myself because it's usually after the Jeep has been sitting a while and no one else is around. Plus not many people know how to drive a manual so I can get out and listen. Here are my specs.. 2007 6 Speed - Lights on Cowl & 130w 8" ProComps - Full Skids - Rock Lizard Super Skink Sliders - Front Hitch Frankenlifted - Al's A-Arms - General Grabber A/T2 31x10.5R15x7 Cragar D Window 4"bs And here is the Video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UReODIF0wQI Thanks dudes, |

Number 1, check to make sure all your lugnuts are tight. |

Sweet thanks guys, I'm going to check for the wheel bearing, jacking the truck off the ground and see if I have any play in the tires. I'll let you know! |

I know it's LOST tradition to over-think things but could it be as simple as the tires have flat spots in them since he says the noise only happens after the Jeep has been sitting for a while? Maybe it's as simple as checking tire pressure? Have you considered that perhaps each time you start up the Jeep you breach the space/time continuum? That's gonna affect ride quality. |

I drive my Jeep daily, by "sitting for a little bit", I meant usually overnight, sometimes for one day. I apologize for the confusion. I checked my pressure a couple days ago when I aired up after the beach. Thanks for keeping everyone on their toes! |

Sounds like there is a problem with you rear brakes.... 4 wheel disc? might be that the rotor is warped..... You'll have to get dirty.

you'll have some play like that due to being a c-clip holding the axles in, kind of hard to tell for sure how much play there was but they have some |

sounds like rotor or caliper more than wheel bearing to me. |

patmaz wrote:  Dont mess around with this, change it as soon as you can! Not sure I agree it's a wheel bearing. As Patmaz said, you should definitely check it but it doesn't look like the problem to me. It looks like the wheel is moving "in and out" (toward and away from the diff) rather than "up and down" The axle bearing is a non tapered roller bearing and only locates the axle "up and down, front to back". The C-clip on the axle in the diff is what locates it "in and out" hopefully this makes sense. I'm sure you checked this already but mine had the exact same symptoms and turned out to be loose lug nuts. |

Thanks for all the responses guys.. I haven't had a chance to do anything about this yet, I haven't really been driving the Jeep much. Definitely not the lug nuts, I took off the tire just prior to the video, and tightened them back up. |

Update, My guy at NAPA put my truck on the lift (for over an hour, for free!) and tested all my joints and such. He says it is probably the axle bearing after all. It turns out that it was the rotor making that noise. I replaced my rotors, which were due anyway, that loud noise went away. Now I have a quiet squeaking noise.. One step at a time.. |
