Rear hatch glass won't open

I know there have been threads on this. Of course I can't find them now when I need them.

Sometimes, when I pull the rear handle to the first detent to open the rear glass, it will not do anything. If I pull it to the second detent, the main gate will open and force the glass open. But the glass will not open independently.

If I repeatedly pull the handle ONLY to the first detent over and over again, it will eventually release the glass and let it open.

Once it opens, the latch mechanism won't reset...so the glass cannot be closed. I have to once again work the handle to the first detent only over and over again for a while...then you can watch the latch pop back into position and the glass can be closed.

With the key fob, the glass *seems* to be working normally.

What is the fix for this and how much is it going to cost?

Edit: I have already tried lubricating the latch mechanism. It's not gummed up.

I tore into it and isolated the problem. The door handle switch is around $12 from the stealership. Will have it back together next week.
