Post subject:  Losing power while accelerating?

I just purchased an '06 Liberty Limited w 58k miles. It looks great and runs great, but I have noticed that it loses power while accelerating in 3rd gear. I'll be accelerating and right around 2000-2500 the rpms just drop down to 1500rpm. I'm a little confused to what could be happening to cause this. If I give it enough gas it downshifts and I'm fine, but it just doesn't feel right. I've never had a vehicle that would just stop accelerating like that. Any ideas? I checked the air filter and it's clean and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a fuel filter that could be dirty.

Hi and welcome! Is it a gaz or diesel libby?

Is it happening around 38-40mph? If so this is your transmission locking up the torque converter and overdrive kicking in, the 42RLE is notorious for this. It's not a problem it's just how it's designed to save gas. It really gets annoying when you add a lift and larger wheels.

It's a gasser and yeah it does it around 35-40mph. It's really annoying when driving up an incline. Does 17-18 mph around town sound like normal mpg?

MPG, yes.

Sounds like it's just overdrive kicking in prematurely, pretty normal. The mpg sounds right, with lift and tires I dropped to 12-14. :(

It seems like everyone is saying overdrive and that it's acting normal, but it's happening around 30mph repeatedly. I'm no Jeep expert, but I'm assuming that they wouldn't have made such a poor design. It kind of defeats the power of the V6. Is there anything else that could be happening?

You could try having the TCM reflashed at the dealer, this will update to the latest settings. Honestly not much can be done if it is just the tranny shifting early. If its not the tranny it could be a number of things: Old spark plugs, coil pack, fuel filter, clogged cat, etc. Sounds like the 42rle just doing its pre-mature thing.

Thanks for the advice. I have the feeling that you're probably right about it shifting a little early. I think I will take it in to have it flashed, and I might sea foam it and change the spark plugs to see if that won't improve things a little. I'll post back when after I do it a let everyone know my results.

I agree! I would do a full tune up especially after just purchasing it. Change everything and you should notice an improvement over all.

I decided to take everyones word and accept that it was just a libby thing, but then one day I was parked and idling and the rpms started hunting a little. They dropped to around 500 rpm and then jumped to 1100 rpm. They would settle out around 700 and then do it again. After the 3rd or 4th time the engine stalled. The lack of power while accelerating is happening slightly more and I just don't think it's a libby thing anymore. I've changed the plugs and seafoamed it, but that didn't do anything. Could I have a bad sensor of some type?
