Safety Question and Cigarette Lighter Relocation ...

So I was thinking: I may try and run a cross bar between the two rear-seat handles to have somewhere to mount things. If anyone has seen the inside of my rig now, I've got a custom ghetto-mount consisting of bungee cords that hold up my CB speaker, etc.

However, I need more room for this short wave radio....so my idea is to run a cross bar and somehow bolt it onto those handles, then mount it there.

Now my quetsion is; when the curtain airbags deploy, do they deploy down and out, or do they explode in an outward fashion? I don't think this would be much of a safety issue since the airbags should cover the small bar that I'd use, but I'm concerned about people hitting their heads on the radio.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Has anyone relocated their cigarette lighter? That seems like a waste of space that could be used for other things too..

I didn't relocate my power outlet, but I did add two more to the center console for my kids to use for hooking up their various juice sucking entertainment devices. I just tapped power off the dash outlet and it has worked great.

I need more space, not power. The dimensions for an Icom radio are

5.5"W, 7.75"D, 1.75"H

I placed my CB inside my center console compartment as I had seen this done by another member on the board. It works great. It will require a little cutting tho. :twisted:

Thanks. I already have a CB tho. CB's don't get nearly as hot as short wave radios since they're only 4W of transmit power.

You better get an ham with separate detachable faceplate like the ICOM 706mkIIg or the Kenwood TM-G707A, so you can install the faceplate on the left side of then steering wheel so kids stop touching it!! jeje

Have you thought of over head? Here is how I installed my scanner and Icom 2720.

Hit the link for my CarDomain site. On page four you will find more photos of where I installed my radios. Some where on this sight I have a write up on how this was installed. I will see if I can find it for you.

FYI: I goofed. That’s a Yaesu 8900 in the earlier pick not an Icom. The Icom is in my Honda. :oops:

Actually I like those antenna mounts too; did you just drill some sheet metal next to the rear flip-glass?

Hey sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

The antenna mount is home made I used 1.5" aluminum angle iron. Cut 3.5" long and cut down the top to a 1.5" square. Secured down with a couple of heavy duty sheet metal screws. No problems with the glass just measure for the screws carefully. Too far forward and they will hit.

For the coax.
On the drivers side mount. It runs thru the boot for the wires onto the swing gate. Under the side trim and carpet to the radio(mounted under the drivers seat). On the passenger side. I wanted to be able to unplug the vertical whip and plug in a portable 6m yagi while camping. So I mounted a bulk head fitting thru the sheet metal next to the taillamp inside the door. This also serves as the antenna for the scanner thru a switch.

i just dont know where to put the faceplate yet. where did you put the rest of the unit? maybe underneath the backseat would do, though it might get kinda muddy down there.

On the 2720. Its okay, I like the Yaesu better. The radio works fine and has good range. But the manual like every Icom I have sucks! There are some things completely missing. Like how to set one of the Sub-audible tones is completely omitted (I forget witch one DTCS???). The book also jumps around. Some features are only described in the front section where the button and control layout is. Then in the chapter on how to program this feature it doesn’t discus it at all in detail. This leaves you to go back and forth. An no; it doesn’t tell you to flip to this page than that. You have to search for the info you want. Don’t get me wrong, once you get it programmed and know how to use it. It is a nice radio. But getting to that point is a pain.

If you are looking for a 2m/70cm duel receiver. Look at the Yaesu 8800. It has all the same features as the Icom. I have the 8900 quad band and love it. Very easy to learn and use. The two radios are virtually the same only the 8900 also has 10m and 6m. The range is excellent. On 6m I can talk to my grandfather in Western Maryland (about 120mi away) at 50watts.

When it comes to mounting your radio. In mine I have the main body bolted under the driver’s seat. I'm concern about mounting it under the rear seat. When you have the seats down it may hit some thing. Or if you forget there’s some thing under there are on the floor and you fold the seat. You could crush it. Then there’s the issue of keeping enough slack in your wires for movement w/o them getting snagged or pooled out. What ever you do keep it off the floor so it can’t get wet.
