My 2002 Liberty started making some loud whirrring noises yesterday. Don't really hear it while driving, but noticeable when slowing down and coming to a stop, you can hear it right through the vents. Opened the hood, and it seems to be coming from one of the pulleys, so far as I can tell. I remember that top pulley (bigger one) used to spin in the middle, like a clutch or something, but didn't notice it moving today. Not familiar with this at all. No difference in performance, engine temp, nothing, just this aggravating noise. Any ideas what may be the cause?

Also, noticed a few weeks ago, drips of water coming out of a hose that appears to come out from the firewall area on the left side of the engine compartment, facing the rear of the jeep. Just a black hose about 6" long and open ended. Is this just a condensation drip or something? Noticed dripping water a few days in a row after driving. Checked the ground and it's just water.

Thanks for the help guys!

am going through this with my CRD. Replaced the engine tensioner pulley and a lot went away. I think the rest is the alternator decoupler.

Sounds like it could be the AC compressor bearings.

so I went out and started up the Jeep. When I look at the AC compressor pulley it is spinning. When I have the temp in regular or on AC, the pulley inside of this (clutch??) spins too, then siezes, then spins again, then seizes. Even when that part is not spinning, the noise from the regular pulley seems louded than normal still. Does this sound like bearings going bad in both or just the clutch pulley? I see on Ebay you can buy just the bearing ring around $25 that says it can be replaced on 2002 Jeeps rather than the whole compressor unit? What are your thoughts?

I think you need to get or rent a tool to remove it.. On my 04 it lasted awhile with bearing noise but the 03 went out on the way back from North Carolina.(bypassed it with a shorter belt to get it home) I replaced the whole compressor on both of them.

so am I safe for a few days or longer with the noise? When it seizes up, I am in trouble right?
