Post subject:  Rtv Sealant and Diffs...

OK, so i FINALLY started changing my diff fluid to full syn. Got the front all done, filled it up with some Mobil 1 75W-140, gonna do the back with the Mobil 1 75W-90, also synthetic...just a couple questions though, do i NEED to use red RTV 'cuz i have some blue "sensor safe" "outstanding oil resistance" stuff, and i just want to know if that will get the job done? Also, it says that it takes 1 hour to dry, and 24 hours to cure, am i safe to drive on it after an hour??? or do i need to wait 24, it's just going to be a short trip home, and then to work in the morning before the 24 hour period is over, sound safe???

Thanks,
-Savage-

So you are either under 21, don't drink, or not in TEXAS?

I normally just use a gasket. Usually cheaper than RTV and I've tried RTV a couple of time and it always leak just a tad. Never had a problem with a gasket though.

Where do you get that at eddo? Never seen one for a diff. Mine is black right now I believe.

We need to start a new thread, "Color of RTV on your diff currently".

I've used

Red
Black
Copper

All worked fine..just make sure your surfaces are clean. If you let the sealent set up for about 20 minutes before putting the cover on will help keep things from being messy 8)

Here you go

I always make a mess w/ the RTV and to me it is just a pain. Plus cleaning off all the old RTV when you change gear oil is even a bigger pain. Also, you can reuse the gasket in a pinch like a trail side repair if necessary. I know some people say a gasket won't work at it will always leak a little. But I've never had a problem on several diff, oil pans, valve covers, etc with just a gasket. Finally the RTV stuff always seem to start sweating gear lube after about 3 months or so. I know it's because I probably didn't apply it correctly, but after 3 meticulous attempts I gave up a went with just a gasket. Simpler, eaiser and usually a little cheaper.

Oh, I meant 2 six packs Edwin. Actually, I'm a slow beer drinker. You'll see tonight. I'm wearing a helmet since I'm driving.

I think how long the RTV last depends on how well you clean it, how long you let it set, if you applied it to both surfaces first, and did you allow it to tack up before putting the cover on.

A gasket would make life more simple.

I have black on mine now....color doesn't really matter. As mentioned above give it about 20 minutes to seal up before you slap the cover on and you should be good to go. I only get a couple drips or so every other night out of mine and thats cause its overfilled just a tad.

I believe the orig. color was gray if im not mistaken....usually if its red or another color, the cover's been off before.

I also prefer to use gaskets when possible, but wasn't able to locate one when I went to get the stuff to change mine.

Hmmmm...ok, well the stuff that was on there was Red...so at least i know the oil has been changed at some point....unfortunately, i didn't know i needed to apply to both surfaces and let it set up first...but i did put some RTV around the base of each bolt...no leaks just yet, but i guess we'll see...

I never put it on both, I put it on the diff its self.
