All,

The speed sensor in the rear diff keeps going bad every few month. The cable to the sensor is good and not damaged. It does not have ABS. Any ideas?????

What part keeps going bad?

I replaced mine about 15K miles ago. Have 66K miles, total. It's the speed sensor in the top of the diff. It's just an ABS wheel speed sensor, tuned into the tone ring.

I know what sensor it is. I just put one in on 2 months ago and it failed just like the one the dealer put in a year ago. I wanted to know if anyone else had a problem with repeated sensor failure.

I was just reminding the old guy (Hi, Tom) which sensor it is. I can't say I've had repeated failure, exactly but, mine would go out every time I drove down to TX, as soon as I dropped into the NM desert until sometime after I got back into the mountains of CO or WY, coming home. Made the trip 3 times in 2 years. I made half of the trip with no speedo the first 2 times. I replaced it, myself (changed the diff oil just to make sure I didn't have water in there [there wasn't any noticeable, btw]) before the third trip and the KJ behaved perfectly. Almost... losing a plastic fender flare while doing 80mph with a 60mph crosswind can hardly be blamed on the Jeep, though.... right?? :ROTFL:

Is it possible that the computer could be going bad?

I saw somewhere on one of the Jeep forums...I think it was Lost....about a recall on the diff sensor for a certain year model of the KJ.
Apparently the sensor was getting eaten up by the type of oil in the diff.
I cannot remember if the dealer fix was to replace the sensor with a different version or if the diff oil had to be replaced with something else.
Try do a search for this recall...I shall have a look to see if I can find it again. :?

Edit:
Ok I found it....not a recall...it is a TSB: 08-048-05. It refers to the 2005 KJ but mentions the CRD?

Yes, the sensor never really went bad, the wires that attach to it were the problem. In stock form they contact the parking brake line and the movement between the two breaks the wires. We drove home from Moab in 2009 with a sewing needle jammed in the connector with the wire wrapped around it and everything duct taped in place in order to have a working speedo and cruise control. This was the second harness that wore out on us. It was repaired with a replacement the pigtail on the harness for this connector leaving the leads long and zip tying the wires away from the parking brake line. It's been over two year and the repair is working great and still looks good.
