Since the t-case is a sealed unit and does not share fluid with the trans you can run any ATF you wish,or even 5w-20/30 engine oil.I would stick with ATF though with the 242 t-case.

I run Amsoil ATF in both, the trany and T-case.

I'm doing my transfer case soon too. Does the Amsoil perform any better than standard ATF+4? I'm of the understanding that both are fully synthetic

On paper, Amsoil is superior. It comes from a better synthetic base stock and better additive package. Here’s a link to the product: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

I wouldn't use engine oil... Other than that make sure it's fully synthetic. It's the easiest one to change.

ATF's are the same grade as 5w-20,some are about the same as 5w-30.No clutches in either the 231 or the 242 so engine oil is perfectly ok to use if you wanted to and will provide the same protection as ATF will. Many do and have for years with no issues.
