my 2004 kj started making a rattle last week. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed no compession in one cylinder. They said a valve spring broke and they believe debris got into the cylinder and scored the wall. I have $400 into it so far and the dealership wants $6700 to replace the motor. Btw orig. Motor has 7K miles. I hate to sell it because I just put new tires, starter, etc. What are my options, it's my daily driver. |

My 2002 did the same thing about 2 years ago. About your only option is to shop around for a garage that will work with you and find a salvage yard motor to go back into it. Did the dealership confirm that that cylinder was definitely damaged or are they just guessing at this point ?? I thought mine had done the same thing again but it turns out my problems are being caused by a faulty fuel injector driver circuit for cylinder #5 in the PCM along with a bad oxy. sensor. Good luck. |

Glad to hear it worked out for you. My faulty PCM turned into another motor, upon further inspection it was found that one of the valve seats had dropped. This makes the second motor for me that had problems with the valves/heads, first one broke a spring and dropped a valve then second motor drops a valve seat and throws off a rocker arm, I'm hoping this third time is the proverbial charm and continues to run till the wheels fall off of it. |

Cacher, I had mine changed out @ 1-1/2yrs ago for @ $2100 at a local (CNJ) junk yard. Motor was 1600 and 500 to do swap. No new belts or hoses or anything had to work out some bugs (all minor) after. Motor supposedly had 45 K but no way to prove. So far still going - probably put 60K on junkyard motor since. I'm knocking on wood as we speak. Motor wasn't quick to find, I believe because it was an 02 something was diffferent an only an o2 doner could be used. |

I think it's cause the '02 had the 45RFE transmission so only an '02 will bolt up. |
