Was driving today and the instrument clutter had a hiccup. All the gauges went dead with needles all to the left and all the idiot lights lit up. As I found a good place to pull over everything went back to normal as I turned on the blinker. Only thing left on was the security alarm indicator which I call the "terminator/cyborg eye" on the left side. I kept going and it had one more 2 second hiccup. This time it went back to normal on it's own. Shut it down and restarted at a light with no more issues the rest of the day. Anyone else have this problem in the past? I'm thinking it may be the battery since I believe it is the original battery, Optima red top. Haven't checked it yet but I imagine it's time to replace anyway. |

Somewhere you have a loose or damaged wire. start checking connectors/ fuses. battery will normally show as a crank but no start - not enough voltage to turn on the computer - and you can get them stress tested just about anywhere. |

Check for any code present. I had this exact problem and I could reproduce it by either turning on the front windscreen wipers or by turning on the air con. What was happening was that in both cases due to wires damaged in the harness, turning either of the above ON caused the alternator charge voltage to rapidly rise to about 17 volts at which time the cluster would "ping" and the gauges would go crazy and sometimes the Jeep would grind to a halt. While I was diagnosing the problem I had my voltmeter plugged into the cigar lighter socket and I could see the voltage rise to about 17 volts when this all happened. I traced the problem to three seperate bad wires in the harness that I had to re-wire......this problem also caused my battery to erupt and spray acid all over the engine bay....not good! |
