Okay, We took a trip on a mild mannered 4-wheel road here in Colorado and the Front Drive shaft blew up. Did you know that Jeep uses a CV joint on the Transfer case end. This is inherently weak. WE have the 6 spd. manual and the 241 transfer case. Long story short the drive shaft failure caused a ton of damage to the transfer case. $2500 rebuilt the transfer case and bought a replacement (read Upgraded) front drive shaft. This is more like what they run on a Rubicon Wrangler. Money well spent!!!! Anyone else have a noise that they can't locate? We had a noise that went away during the repair that I attributed to our tires. |

That noise was your CV on the driveshaft making noise. You could have saved alot of $$$ by having the noise identified. Oh and you got ripped hard on that t-case,they are only $900 brand new from the dealership, expect $200-$300 for install, and a new driveshaft should only cost $350 at most in not buying a OEM one. |

If you would of looked I bet the boot was gone on the rear part of your driveshaft allowing the bearing to run dry. That was more than likely the noise you had been hearing. No fault of the driveshaft or Jeep , IMO Well known fact that they go bad and its a 85 dollar fix cheap compared to what you got into |

It may have been a easy fix to fix the original problem. Bummer! I must be old school because I have never had a shaft issue on any of my 4X4 take out so much drive line. I guess you have to learn from it. Thanks !!!! |

I am hearing a low frequency moan from the front that sounds like an agressive tread tire while in 2 WD on the highway. Does the front shaft turn in 2WD? |
