Post subject: | Parking Brake is always broken |
My parking brake has been weak since I bought my jeep (2005 model, bought it new). I've been in to have them adjusted numerous times, and eventually they told me that the entire assembly had to be replaced. $300 someodd dollars I begrudgingly agreed to (they said brakes are not warranteed past 12k miles...I didn't think the brake HANDLE was a "wear" part). And now it's failed again. I have 90k miles on the jeep - it seems like this is a ridiculous number of failures. Any suggestions on what to do? I'm going to try going to the same dealership that replaced the assembly before and see if they will do it again and cover the cost or something. Do they make aftermarket parking brakes? It's kind of necessary to have a parking brake with a stick shift, especially when you live on a hill. I'm a little sick of having to carry wheel chocks around. |

Liberty e-brakes have always come loose. It was a flaw of theirs. Dont know if there is a solution though othern then adjusting them. btw adjusting them is not that difficult just time consuming. -Take off the rear wheels -take off the brake caliper -take off the rotor and spin the little sproket that moves the drum pads out a bit. -slide the rotor back on till you feel alittle friction. -back off the sproket a tinny bit -put everything back together. Easy but time consuming. |

Never seen and mini-drum style parking brake setup hold a adjustment no matter what vehicle it's on.The only sure way to have a working parking brake all the time with no adjustments ever is the calipers with the intergrated parking brake inside of the caliper itself. There a royal pain when time comes to replace brakes but a small trade off for a good parking brake. |

I have an 03 Renegade that seems to be having the same issue with rear disc brakes, any suggestions on this? |

I have an 03 renegade and it too comes loose. Everytime I either adjust it or I have my mechanic do it when it goes in for a service. |

There is a good write-up here: viewtopic.php?p=187268#p187268 I had problems with my handle on my 2002 CRD from new....had the agents adjust the brake at every service. Eventually, after the warranty was up...they replaced the handbrake handle mechanism. It has been working fine but is now starting to give problems so I tried the procedure stated in the link.....works for a while. The mechanism has a spring wrapped around a drum and acts as a sort of one-way clutch. It seems to me that as the system ages the round spring loose tension. I believe that the spring may have to be removed and re-tentioned then maybe it will work for a while. ![]() |

Yup, ours suck as well! Not legal, but I'm thinking hydraulic hand brake myself. |
