Post subject:  For those who take their Liberty on the beach...
and also have the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs.
How do these tires do in sand? I would think when the pressure
is dropped that the lugged sidewalls actually would act like
a paddle and do pretty well.

Anyone have any expreience with this?

I didn't want to go too low, I dropped mine to 18 and they did fine. Probably would have done fine lower too, but there were no other vehicles with me so I didn't want to chance it.

Maybe, you can also cause yourself other problems, like overheating the tranny and/or engine, or even without problems it'll just be making driving difficult.

Dropping the tire pressure makes a night and day difference for driving in sand. Not dropping pressure for sand is somewhat akin to driving down the highway on flat tires ... you can do it, but you really don't want to.

In my experience, unless you have a LOT of horsepower for your weight (like a rail buggy) the milder your tires are, the better off you are. Street tires or mild AT work better than something like mudders (they have too much of a tendency to dig - which is what you do NOT want to do). As a fer-instance: on my TJ, I prefer the 30" factory GS-As for driving on sand over my 31" BFG MTs.

You should be fine on the MTRs, but I would recommend dropping tire pressure til you get a nice bulge.

My BFG Muds did fine on the beach at the OBX Sandrun. Dropped the pressure to 18psi and they worked like a charm! I have never had tranny or engine overheating problems with dropping tire pressure.

My experience has been that street tires work better in the sand. I had a Cherokee with cheap tire store brand street tires and they worked quite well. On the other hand, I rented a Wrangler once with mud tires and it didn't do so well. But either way, make sure you air down.

To be specific ... you are more likely to have overheating problems if you do NOT drop the tire pressure. Reduced tire pressure equals easier driving in sand.

I tend to start at half of my street pressure and drop it further if need be (my street pressure in the TJ is already less than 30psi so I drop to 14psi or even lower in it - haven't taken the KJ to the beach yet).

we did 2 beach runs last year with stock GSA's & I dropped my tire down to 14 psi the first time & 11 psi the second time & I had no problems at all was out for a few hours & no over heating except when I tried 4 HI then the tranny light came on,ride in 4lo and your golden never had a problem or concern :)

I guess I should have prefaced the topic with "I ride on the beach every weekend during the summer but was wondering...".

Thanks for everyones replies but I wanted to know specifically how the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs do on the sand.

Anyone have any experience driving on the sand
with these tires in particular?

What did you do to make it go back down? Stop and put it in N?
