Post subject:  2006 crd jeep liberty hydro locked please help!!

I just bought a 2006 jeep liberty crd. This is what I have been told about the jeep. The previous owner said they had problems with loosing water. And then one day the jeep wouldn't turn over when trying to crank. He took it to the dealership and they told him he had a cracked head. He then wanted a second opinion so he took it to his mechanic. The mechanic told him that it was hydro locked so he drained the water and oil. Then put new oil in jeep and cranked it up. He didn't let it run long because it was making a lot of top end engine noise.

So this is where I come in at. I got it home knowing it at least had a blown head gasket. The first thing i did was removed the valve cover/cylinder head cover. 12 of the 16 rocker arms were either broke or severely twisted. I figured they broke because the cylinders got full of water and when the valves tried to open the rocker arms couldn't push against the water. They were obviously designed to be the weakest link in the engine.

I was wondering if anybody had an opinion for the best route to fix this engine. Should I just replace head gasket and rocker arms, or buy a used head from somebody, etc. Depending on my options, if anybody has the parts available please let me know. I cant wait to get this jeep on the road. Thanks.

A hydrolocked engine isnt going to break the rocker arms. From what I've read here they are designed to break to avoid further engine damage if the timing belt breaks or jumps time. Losing water + broken rocker arms would lead me to believe the water pump leaked and got on the timing belt which caused the timing belt to fail and thus... broken rocker arms. The binding parts could be the reason the engine is locked. It also could indeeed have overheated and blown the headgasket or cracked the head. The only way you'll know is to tear it down and see.
