So I fill up with gas the other day and my KJ wont start. It finally starts and then dies a mile or so down the road. The engine shuts off and the tach goes haywire. 2 weeks later everything is fine. Yesterday the same thing happened while I was driving on the parkway. The engine dies and then tachometer goes haywire (moving all around the gage). I was thinking a fuel filter problem. Anyone have this probelm? What was it? (PS I have 135K on it with just about original everything) |

I would check for faulty wires. The squirrels or mice could have crawled up in the Jeep and nibbled on them. Fuel filter wouldn't make the tach go crazy. It would make your Jeep die though. |

Just spoke to my mechanic he is thinking it might be a crank shaft sensor. sound worse then it probably is. I have only don top end work (from the engine deck up) so Im not sure. |

Does the check engine light come on? Is it throwing any codes? You know the on board diagnostic trick right...? On/off/on/off/on, and you should get a readout on the odometermwith a code that you can look up online. I'd think a sensor would trip the OBD system. |

So my mechanic called. He said it was both the crank and cam sensor. $240 out the door. Sucks |
