p0442 code keeps coming back on my 03 renegade (70 000kms). I took it to a mech the other day he ran tests, everything came out good...cleared the code...now its back on again. Before I take it back to get a smoke test done...is there anything I could do at home ( i don't have jack or anything to lift it)?. Also how long roughly would it take a mech to do a smoke test?...my mech charges $85/hour cdn so I'm trying to get a rough estimate.

Also if this helps on my computer up top it said for the last 2 months I've had it i get roughly 16.9 L/100km now its slowly dropped to 16.2L/100km. Any help would be great. I'm kinda cashed strapped for the next bit...so I hope that this little leak won't cost an arm and a leg.

Besides looking at the rubber evap lines on the canister(by gas tank) you need a smoke test done. They should charge a flat rate diagnostic charge for a diag, usually between $80-$150 for the diag which would include a smoke test for EVAP codes.

If it helps (i'm a noob) I noticed when I unscrew the gas cap it doesn't release or make the sound of pressure releasing. It use to before the p0442 code came up

This is because the gasoline vapors are not being contained any longer, thus the p0442 which is an evaporative emissions leak. A smoke test is the only accurate way to diagnose the leak. If your lucky you will only need a gas cap.
