while driving on only a fire trail here in San Diego my overheated trans light comes on. I was only on the trail for about 5 miles and only on 4x4 for 2 miles of this, now the trail was steep but nothing a jeep cant handle. the only thing i can think is that the trans oil was low andwhile the tilt of the car made the trans overheat. oh but you cant check the oil level since the 2012 liberty's dont have a trans oil dip stick. anyone has any ideas why it would overheat in such a short time?

4 high or 4 low and how fast or slow were you going
If you were going real slow and had it in 4 high then yes it could over heat the trans

4 AUTO (HI) going between 5-20 mph, it wasa for only a few miles before it turned on. it was only 78 temp outside and windy. I also have a trans cooler, so it makes no sense.

Should of had it in 4 low if going 5 mph or so
trans can heat up fast even if you have a trans cooler etc.
When in 4 high and going slow its basiclly slipping the whole time so doesn't take long

so having it in 4 low is fine even know the road it not to ruff? i have never owned a Jeep before so not to sure on how their transfer case and trans work. i was a little upset that it got that hot that fast. the hill is only 4300 feet high and it about 9 miles from base to top, mostly small rock but a well traveled trail so not to steep. so why would low not heat the trans up as much?

Easy way to think of it
Think about riding a 10 speed bike up a long grade
If you have it in 1 or 2 its fairly easy and you are not sweating much if any due to the ease of pedaling it
Now go up that same grade in 10th , it takes much more force to try and get up the hill, you are sweating due to working harder
Very basic explanation but its about the same in any 4 X 4

Yeah, stay in 4 low unless you are going faster than 20-25.
