Post subject:	Air Condition died and a burning smell
So my wife just called me and was gonna drive home from her moms house which is 3 hours away. She said the a/c was not blowing cold and she had a burning smell. She turned the a/c off and went back to her moms house, and said the burning smell stopped when she turned it off. So since I dont have the Jeep here at home, Im hoping some of you can help me diagnose so I know where to start when it gets here. Ive already replaced the a/c clutch and blower motor resister. Has anybody had something similar happen and what did you do? sorry for the repost, for whatever reason the first one ended up in the 08+ KK forum.

Burning smell with AC on and goes away when turned off? Melted compressor clutch.

within the last year I had the clutch replaced along with a new clutch bearing. Its frustrating trying to diagnose this with my wifes description of what the symptoms are. Im just trying to find out if I can even have her drive this thing home and then take a look at it when it gets here. I just called her and she has no idea whats going on under the hood and had a hard time opening it. Apparently the belt is seeming OK and the clutch bearing doesnt seem to be wobbling or making funny noises. So maybe the clutch again, or the whole compressor. Dam these worthless A/C systems. All my problems with this jeep has been a/c related

The inside blower still working? There was a recall for the valeo blower motor that could overheat on air conditioner and in some cases caused interior fire,not saying it is your case,but you could check that out. The blower motor is on the passenger side,under the dash board,you remove 2 screws,pull down the plastic panel,and there it is. Could be the blower resistor to,it is behind the glove box,but on most cases when the resistor fails you loose some speeds on the blower control...

I read on another thread that you could bypass the whole a/c system with a shorter belt, so I went to napa and got the 66" belt and am about to drive the 3 hours to go get her as soon as I get off work. Im also bringing my flatbed trailer and am anticipating towing her home. I will report back and see what I come up with. Thanks for the heads up on the blower motor recall, i'll trouble shoot this thing when i get there. So does anybody know where I can find just a clutch for this thing? Ive come across a couple of dead ends locally and I know you can get one, I just dont know where. I hear its pretty common for just the clutch to die, which mine already has, and i know its a cheaper fix than getting a whole new compressor. I did already replace the clutch bearing and im wondering if that thing has already died causing the new noise and potentially smokin the belt. now im just watching the clock waiting for my long drive.

Might be a seized compressor burning the belt when the clutch engages. When the ac is off the clutch still operates correctly and freewheels with the belt

it turns out that the brand new clutch bearing I bought from napa less than a year ago burned up and melted the clutch and probably the compressor too. Also the 66" belt was not even close to fitting, so that info from the other thread was wrong. So I had to remove the clutch from the compressor and had to buy the 82" belt and bypass the whole A/C compressor altogether. I got the Jeep running so I could drive it up on the trailer and tow the whole family home. I know the compressors are spendy and im not looking forward to spending close to $500 bucks for a new one. Anybody know where to find one for cheap, other than a parts yard? If anybody wants to know.... the belt that worked for me was from O'Reily's and it was a micro-v belt part # K060815

To keep any warranty on a new compressor you must also replace the reciever/dryer and orifice tube(a whole line on a KJ) and must have proof those parts were installed with the compressor.It's not a DIY job unless you have the special tools to do AC work.

thats what the guy at jeep said also. So I got an appointment with jeep on monday morning and they will take a look at it and im afraid to see what they want to charge for all that work. im guessing at least a grand they also said they have a lower control arm recall, anybody know about this? would they also step up and say anything about the blower motor recall also? I have never taken my jeep to a dealer and am very worried about it, but I want this dam A/C system to come with a warranty since its so prone to failing. Just for further thought, we also had a problem with the aftermarket sunroof installed by jeep when we bought it. It is a webasto sunroof and I called them and they will warranty it with a smaller glass company locally. they gave me a claim number and said the glass company will replace the glass for free and charge webasto for the warranty work. I havent taken it in yet, but i must say that so far Im very pleased with the customer service with Webasto.

Just got the Libby back from the dealer and sure enough we had to replace the dryer and one of the lines and the whole compressor. It was a little more than I wanted to spend but since I dont have any of the A/C tools and I wanted a parts AND labor warranty I shelled out the $1200 for the whole system with a 12 mo. warranty. They replaced the rear lower control arms and the blower motor was already replaced before we got it, so all recall items are taken care of. Thanks to Jeep, my wife is now happy and can remain cool.
