I have a chance to pick up an '89 Commanche p.up cheap. It is a FI 4.0L with a five speed and part-time four wheel drive. I have not seen it, but it supposedly has a bad clutch master cyl as the pedal has no resistance and ( allegedly) it will not pump fluid to the slave cylinder when the line is opened. It is a long bed but the guy knows nothing about the "metric ton" model with the D44 rear, so it probably has what, the D35? What issues should I look for or should I just pass this by? I know nothing about this series of jeep mechanically, and I know that some of you guys have Xj experience. I'd appreciate any help... |

How cheap? From what I have read on the NAXJA forum the slave/master cyl. failure is a common problem. I believe the 89's were D35 or D44's. I have been looking at MJ's for a while now and I may someday pick one up. Go for it! |

Well, it is hard to say for a price, as I would take it in on trade. BUT, it was this truck + cash, and the cash in the deal equals what I have in the other vehicle How big of a PITA to change the slave cyl., if it is that? If this is like a YJ, aren't they INSIDE of the bellhousing? |

When the slave cylinder on my YJ went out, I had to pull the tranny, you are right, its in the bell housing. But at least you can put in a new clutch at the same time. |

The cab corners and "frame rails" look and feel ok, and the floor of the cab has been replaced, but the rocker panels are shot. Is that a major problem due to the unibody? |
