 Post subject: minor binding in 4 wheel full time

has anyone experienced minor binding in 4 wheel full time when turning tight corners?

I am about to change my differential fluids this weekend, not sure if that is going to help it.

On what type of roads
If on black top / drier roads you should not have it in 4 WD anyways
only on snow covered etc

dry roads...but it's 4 wheel full time. It says you can drive it in 4 wheel Full Time even on dry pavement.

it happens when i make tight turns in 4 wheel high. all the time...

that is normal, that means your front tires are scrubbing the asphalt. Like everyone said dont use it in full time unless you need it

Why is it bad to run PART TIME 4hi on dryish roads anyways. Beacuse i had to drive on some roads last weekend that were dry for the most part, but the wind was 50+ so there was snow blowing and i couldnt see the road to make sure i wasnt on ice. I was just wondering how bad it hurts the jeep.

you can run Full time - all the time - dry roads or not.

no noticeable binding

(I get as much from the front truetrac even if it's in 2 wheel drive)

however if it doesn't fully release when you switch full to 2wd - you'll get binding - because it's semi stuck in part time - stop - back up and see if it clears

can't see the fluid having much impact - but do check for metal particles/shaving in the oil
clearances can cause issues.

For Part time drive
every time you you turn right or left - all 4 tires revolves slightly different amounts
in Part time - the transfer case mechanically forces them to revolve exactly the same - they're geared together, so either the tires slip (on ice/mud/dirt) or the gear chain starts stretching.
when the chain stretches enough - it breaks - and wads up between the gear and the case - exploding the case.

tjkj has a really nice picture of one that ran 70 miles on the highway and blew the case out.

The front Diff is attached to a gear on one of the chain -
the engine and rear diff are attached to a gear on the other end.

any difference in the rotation of the front wheels vs the rear - and that includes turning at all, bumps, tire pressure difference - has to be taken up by the tires sliding or the hardware breaking

of that hardware - the chain is the weakest link - normally it stretches - (why they have rebuild kits that replace the chain) - if it stretches enough it breaks.

not really much you do. I have rebuilt many of the NP231's and a handful of NP242's and chain stretch is normally caused by either low fluid levels or bad fluid. Over heating the internals is the death of the chain. You will usually crack the case at the front input before you stretch a chain.

Ive seen a few just like that..............LOL.............I have a pile of TC case halves back in AZ in the yard.........the chains are no big deal to replace about a 3 hour job including dropping the Transfer case, dismantle clean install the chain reassemble and reinstall.

Ok, please clear this up for me. My wife drives the Libby as her DD, I tell her to put in part time when it snows, she too, complains about the jerking when she pulls in to parking spot.
Sooo...part time should be considered like 4lo and full time 4hi?
Should she put it in 4hi instead?
Does part time and full time have basic same gearing unlike 4Hi and 4 lo?
I'm used to my 4hi I can run most of the time, then 4Lo for super low end grunt for like pulling.

Unless your wife's off road, crawling over rocks or downed logs etc, she probably doesn't need 4LO as a daily driver.

IF she's experiencing binding/jerking/jumping while in 4HI, my guess is that the roads she's been driving on are not slippery enough to really warrant 4wd (they don't allow the tires to slip when she's turning etc).

So a sport usually comes with command trac not select trac, which do you have? assuming command trac Never 4lo on pavement, 4hi only as needed, shift in and out as required while on pavement, if she is going to use 4hi on the road she needs to under stand not to steer it sharply in parking lots unless the surface is completely covered or take out of 4hi into 2x to park

Fulltime is just like AWD so you can be on any surface and make any turn you want. Sport is a trim level... I have a sport and my t case has part time, fulltime and 4 Lo but I don't have the blasphemous chrome grille.

FYI - Jeep's Nomenclature is an instruction on how to drive - it is not a description of what the transfer case does. i.e.

Full time - means you can drive it full time - you can put it in 4W Full time in November and take it out in March - and drive on Dry roads or Snow or mud in between
if you have Full time (in a Liberty) you have a Select trac NV242 transfer case so there's a differential between the front and the rear. (all US CRD's have the NV242)

now Part time - means you can only drive it in 4wd part of the time -and that part must be on slippy roads - (wet only if you have really bad tires) snow, dirt, mud - because the front and rear are geared together. and it can be 4hi or 4 low. If your transfer case only says Part time you have either a NV231 or 241 - and do not drive it on dry roads - it'll break.
