Post subject: | GASPCAP then "Check engine" warnings |
Hi, I own a 2007 Jeep Compass. About 3 mornings ago randomly the "GASCAP" warning came on (I thought it was weird bc I [thought] I had driven a few times since recently getting gas). I didn't think it was a huge issue and went to my destination (it was like 5 mins away) and returned home. The next day (I believe) the "GASCAP" warning was gone and instead was the "check engine" symbol. I went to Autozone and they diagnostically tested the issue and it came up with the P0455 trouble shooting code. I suspect now that the issue is simply with a faulty gas cap. I really don't want to go to the dealership and have them tell me I need to spend $230,498,509,645 for a >$50 fix... Now for the question(s): 1. I have a life time power-train engine warranty --> does this fall under that (it's a stretch, I know) 2. Since the above issue, I have taken the gas cap off and put it back on (twice), but the warning light is on --> is it worth re-setting the code and seeing if it doesn't return? 3. How expensive/difficult is it to replace the gas cap on one's own? (My dad is handy and I'm confident he could sort it out) |

#3 - unscrew old cap, screw in new cap. I don't think dad needs to get involved... The code should reset itself after a couple starts. You should be able to buy a gas cap at any auto parts store You also might want to check out a patriot/compass forum to see if it's a common problem with an easy solution. This forum is for libertys mostly. |

Have someone clear out the codes after you installed a new cap...if it comes back on, you know it wasnt the cap Sent from my Home Phone using Tapatalk 2 |

Autozone and diag ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They just pulled the code and told you that it's the gas cap.A diag actually takes some time with a very expensive smoke machine to diagnose EVAP codes, and a high end scanner.Only buy gas caps at the dealership, yes I know it's more $$$ but having them last more then 1 year is worth it. Unless the gas cap is left off your not going to get P0455 code for the gas cap as that code is for a "gross leak" or really big leak.OBDII codes do not list the cause, only what is effected and is only a starting point in finding the actual problem part and replacing. |

This is how AutoZone makes money 1. Customer drives in 2. Hey, can you scan my car, I have a check engine light on? 3. Sure, no problem. Autozone goes out with their $10 scanner and gives you a code. 4. Code is XYX123. It's this. I can sell you the part for $XX.XX 5. Customer buy's part. 6. Install's part 7. Light is still on. 8. Customer gets free scan again. 9. Ok, you replaced that part, it must be this one at $XXX.XX 10. Repeat Step 5-9 multiply 3 times 11. Issue is still there. 12. Autozone, you may need to go to a mechanic with some better diagnosis, sorry parts are non-refundable. But the scans are "Free". 13. Please come again. ![]() |
