Over the past few days I've noticed a clunking noise coming from the rear of the KJ. It kind of sounds like a ball joint type clunk. I checked the rear "boomerang" and the balljoint on that looked good- no rips and wasn't leaking. I then decided to feel the shocks to see if they were loose. Both were tight, but the drivers side was dry and grease free, then I tried the passenger side and it was completely covered in grease. Does this mean the shock is leaking?

If you scroll down there, it has a chart and it says a film is normal, but the passenger side made my hand black.

Thanks!

I have clunking in the rear on mine as well over bumps. It's a really hard metal on metal sound thunk sound when I go over like a speed bump and come back down. Mine seems to be worse the colder it is out. The only day it hasn't done it on me was yesterday when it was in the mid 50's out. I also have Billsteins in the rear that where installed a few weeks ago. Has been there ever since. Everything on mine are also tight and the top bushing kit/sleeve was used on the springs and everything. Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you.

Also, I have nothing on either shock. (at least last week when I was looking things over there wasn't anything noticeable)

Here's what I found on the floor under the shock.

I took it for a drive and it really sounds like the passenger rear area. Maybe check yours again?

Yeah I will check mine again as soon as I get out of the office. I am getting under it anyway later today to change out my rotors. Mine also seems to generate from the passenger rear area as well. I'll get some pics of it all and see if there is anything leaking though.

I'm not seeing anything dripping at all. The boots or whatever are all scrunched looking though. Not sure if I even need those in or if I could just cut them off. Didn't feel like there was a reservoir of fluid held up in them though.

Thanks for the pic...I got the yellow and blue shocks though, it look like you got the higher spec ones.

They are the 5150's (same as 5100). Sorry I couldn't help.
