Hi all,
I was wondering how hot your coolant gets while wheeling? My Scangauge was telling me mine was up at 218 degrees before the fan kicked in to bring it down. Is this a little high?

The electric cooling fan does not turn on til 219 degrees(+/-2 degrees),If you have HD cooling the mechanical fan clutch does not fully lock till 230 degrees.Heck the OE t-stat just starts to open at 195 degrees but does not fully open till 218 degrees.

I have the HD cooling setup and my 04 Liberty Sport has run hot while in 4WD since the first days I've owned it. The transmission over temperature indicator lamp would come on.

I've discovered two issues.
#1 the two speed electric fan had only one working speed
#2 the mechanical clutch fan wasn't working as it should

I've replaced both but I'm still having transmission over temperature problems in 4WD.
I'll change my ScanGauge readout to F and see if the fans are kicking in when they should.

Oh yeah, and for the best cooling keep your rad clean.

I've got the HD cooling setup and since mine is an early '03, it's got even more extra cooling goodies that I've forgotten what they are atm

I'm bummed it was even an option on the Renegades! I'm very paranoid about getting the jeep hot when wheeling-- once she's good and heat soaked, they won't come down for a while.

I know mine when I'm wheeling will go to 219,fan kicks on(no HD cooling) and drops to about 210,then the fan kicks off.It does that cycle 3-4 times then the fan just stays on and the temps drop to between 194-199 degrees and don't move since the fan just stays on.

What's the difference between the two? different torque outputs?

What's the difference between the two? different torque outputs?[/quote] The gear reduction is 2.72:1 times greater in 4low,runs higher engine rpm's but less stress on the engine and trans. Since you have a '03 you could have the 45RFE and the in-radiator trans cooler which would explain why you don't have issues in 4hi while those with the 42RLE and the stand alone trans cooler will have issues with the trans overheating.

Just buy one,brand new, for a '02 KJ with a auto trans.It will be direct fit in your '04 though you will have to mod the trans cooler lines(just 1 line,the other still goes to the OE cooler) to use the in-radiator cooler.Make sure you mod the trans cooler line that is the hot line from the trans,you want the in-radiator cooler to cool the fluid 1st before going to the stand alone OE cooler.
