I have only one key with working buttons, and I strongly suspect it wasn't the factory one. Or maybe it was. IT has no chrysler or jeep symbol anywhere on it.

Is there a less expensive means of getting new programmed fobs, rather than ones built into the key itself?

As far as I know there are 3 key options:
1. key with built in fob - will lock/unlock/run vehicle with no alarm
2. "chipped" key - will manually lock vehicle and can manually unlock vehicle but will, at least on mine, trigger the alarm which can immediately be shut of by putting the chipped key in the ignition and turning it on and will crank and run vehicle
3. "unchipped" key - pretty worthless although it will manually operate the lock so if you leave either a 1 or 2 key in the vehicle you can get it but will trip the alarm and won't shut it off. Cannot run the vehicle unless there is either a 1 or 2 key close enough for the system to "read"

If you have some combination of two #1 and 2 keys you can program a 3rd using the owner's manual procedure otherwise a good locksmith shop can do it for you although they will or should ask to see a copy of the vehicle registration and your ID.

In the past I looked around for a fob separate from the built in one but had no luck.

FYI while I cannot speak for the fobbed key I can state with absolute certainty that the "chipped" key is not the same for 05 and 06, been there done that. You flat cannot program and 05 chipped key to work in an 06.

I had lost a key and was down to one key.

the system will let you get any new chipped key or remote key with buttons and program it yourself IF you have two working keys in hand...... THis was not my situation and don't sound like the OP's either. what I did was get a remote key from eBay for about $60. Then I took that to a local lock smith (Klepper's Key and Lock in York,PA) had them cut the key blank to match my one remaining key and use the programing tool they had to set the new key up in the Jeep. Klepper's charge me $35 for that service which with the key cost is cheaper than the Dealer. So you have two Paths get your own key and find a locksmith with the equipment to do it or the dealer. Also my Locksmith sold plain chipped keys with programing for $25.

I lost mine and had no idea where. I purchased one through ebay, had it programmed at the dealer, and then proceded to buy another one at ebay that I programmed myself so that it would not happen again. Well, to end the story about a year ago I was trimming shrubbery in my front yard near the front door when I found the original lost key. It had been hiding through snow, rain, sun etc. for about two years, and it still worked!

You MUST have your vehicle with you (at the dealership) and the new key will cost 175.00
