I just purchased a 05 liberty crd, has 113000 on it, no maint records....is there an easy way to tell if the timing belt has been changed?

There really isn't a great way to tell if they have been changed, except to pull a dealer service history report (should be able to @ local dealer with proof of ownership). I would do that, then if it doesn't show that it has been done, change the belt immediately. |

air.boss1 1. welcome to LOST 2. CRD questions are best posted over on viewforum.php?f=5 3. once over there you really need to read Sir Sam's NOOB guide As to your question JeepCoMj is essentially correct. Physically there is no way to tell if the belt has been changed short of thru all the replacement steps up thru removal of the timing belt cover and even then I would not, personally, rely on the belt "looking" new to make the call although a really "old" belt should be obvious. Given the cost of a belt vs. the cost of a broken belt if you are in that far best just replace. Yes to others I know you can pop a few of the timing belt cover bolts with everything in place as see a bit of the belt as it goes across the cam gears but at best this would maybe allow one to ID a really old belt. IMHO the only way to be sure is 1) if a DCJ dealer did the work it should be in the records JeepCoMj mentions even if the work was done at another dealer or 2) a physical copy of the bill including parts for the service including notation as to mileage when done and the VIN number. I would not trust anyone who says it's been done other than some forum members most of whom have posts on this forum when the work was done. |
