I am trying something a little bit different when driving. Under 55 turn the overdrive off and only switch it on during hi-way use. It has seemed to help get a few extra miles from the tank. Could I get some more vol. to try this for their next tank to see if it works for them.

I have always kept the OD off under 45mph and I have always noticed I get a few more out of the tank then most other people say they get. I'm not a transmission expert by any means but it seems like the o.d. gear is a waste of rpms unless you are up to speed anyway

I'm very new to this (working on third tankful), but I agree... no overdrive until you're going over 45 and only if you'll be maintaining that speed for at least a couple of miles.

If you turn off the OD, you probably are getting torque converter lock up earlier, this might be the reason .

I leave it off until I am over 55 and maintaing a speed over that. I have alwats felt that my Libby loves od and does not drop out of that gear until you press the pedal halfway to the floor. With the od off the power is there and the gas is not used as much. Plus where I live you can't go 20' without going over a hill. I didn't get a chance to put all my thought into the post last night but this is what i was thinking.

I was down your way on Friday. I had to help my uncle who lives outside of Arden in Barbour County. Although I've been gone for 16 years I'm still a Mountaineer at heart.

Someone posted on the other board that DC told them the 3.7L is "most efficient" at 2200 RPM. I wonder if, in addition to the convertor, your are keeping the rpm's at the "sweet spot"?

Geeze, I don't know what 45mph is ?!? I can however say that at about 105 MPH in my CRD I was at around 2400 RPM.

105 with a lift and ATs may not be such a good idea!

I'm with longarm... I am rarely under 60 in my KJ. With the exception of school zones, construction zones, and traffic problems (a.k.a. - cops).

Must be nice to live in wide open spaces?! Maybe some day I will get a chance to see what she'll do!

Then again, it most likely won't impress me.

I've been turning off the OD since reading this post. This past week I haven't noticed any gas savings but I do really like the behaviour of the Lib' around town with the OD off. Much more responsive.

Of course out here in the wide open spaces of the 6th largest city in North America that OD does come in handy. :P
