Headlight protection

Wow - new forum format....guess it's been a while since I posted.

Does anyone make a pre-cut kit for the Libby with that really heavy 3M clear adhesive stuff? I've seen kits for motorcycles and other cars, but I haven't seen one yet for the KJ. I really would like to get one that covers the headlights, foglights and the front edge of the hood.

Well, I searched on eBay, and the only clear adhesice vinyl ones I saw were made by AutoArmor, I believe, and they wanted 70 bucks for them!! That's a bit outrageous, if you ask me. I could probably buy a roll of the stuff and do the entire front of the Jeep for less....

Are these the same ones you bought?

Yep - entire headlight assemblies were going between $75 and $125...

The headlights on the Libby are not glass and are made of a crack and scratch resistant plastic.

Well, so are the visors on motorcycle helmets, motorcycle windscreens, most perscription glasses, etc. and we all know how long those last....2-3 seasons and they're a mass of swirls and nicks, which is why I'd like something removable/replacable to protect them.

"Scratch resistant", with regard to plastics, just means that they don't scratch as easily as untreated plastic. It still scratches easier than glass, not to mention the discoloring over time....

Have you asked the people who wheel their KJ's heavily whether they've had any scratches (that they can't live with or get rid of) after a few years of use?

The 3M stuff, precut is available from Giot's Garage. Not cheap but seems to work well. I have a spare set of fog light covers for the '05 and up if you are interested just PM me.

I didn't want to use the stick on protection cause I wasn't sure if you could get it to lay down without any bubbles in it.

I'm working on a set of mesh covers at the moment. I'm hoping they don't look to cheesie when I get done. I found an 8 inch heat lamp cover with about 1/4 inch mesh that fits directly over the head lamps. They stick out some but...I'm mounting them with 3 spring clips to hold them in place. If they look worthwhile I'll post some pics. If not just ignore this...

I just custom made my own from some good old chicken wire and plastic clips bought from ACE Hardware. It actually looks pretty cool (in my opinion). Made covers for the head and fog lights.

I'll take some digital pics this weekend and post them.

Now that's what I'd be interested in. Both for the fog lights and the regular headlights, even. My only worry is that if the mesh is too tight, the light won't get through enough and if it's too open, the flying-road-rocks will get through. I guess I really just want them for the looks :-)

The light definitely gets through, although I replaced both fog and headlight bulbs with Sylvania SilverStars so I'm probably back down to the original bulbs intensity. But, it does look awesome though!

Has anyone looked into using a stone guard from KC or Hella? I'm not sure what size the stock lights are, but it might be an option.

I got them from Griot's in a kit for all Liberty models ( around $50 for the headlights and fog lights). Unfortunately I they did not have the clear shields for the fog light on the '05 Renegade, but it did come with the other 2 versions.

The stuff lays down well, if you are patient. I have done 3 vehicles and even the little bubbles can be taken out with a pin. Leave the car outside for a few days in the sun and everything comes out great.

It doesn't have the same appeal as a mesh cover, but it does the job without blocking the light.
