Post subject:  Q's on light bar Install ( found a neat solution)

ok guys i have just recieved my Rene Light bar

and i have a couple of questions, I have an export model delivered in Australia and when i pulled some of the trim back i found THIS

Image

ok i had forgotten it was there when i installed my driving lights

un plugged

Image

now the wiring loom that came with the bar has this

Image

the switch that came with the light bar plugs straight into this mystery plug behind the dash

my fuse box under the bonnet ( Hood) has the light bar fuse already there

can anybdy check thier 04 sport and see if this is just an export thing or if it is common to all 04 KJ's and what would happen if i try and plug it in on a dry run

could i cook the electrics?????

Fouros it's pretty common for auto manufatures to put connections for higher models in the lower models. They do that so that they can cut down on the number of different parts, make them more cookie cutter like and make more, and that also makes it so that adding on is plug and play. I have the U-Connect Handsfree kit and it was all plug into plugs that were there. My Dad when he bought his Intrepid found a set of 300M leather, power seats and they bolted right in. All the plugs for the pass seat where already there even though it was oem with a manual seat. I would say you have little chances of frying something. Just make sure that all the fuses are good and if you are really worried about it go to the next fuse size down and plug that in that way if it does want to blow something it will blow that smaller fuse faster than the larger one.

now the interesting thing

is there a wiring diagram for the KJ anywhere i can get my hands on so i can see if the power lead from the light bar can be connected to a lead under the dash???????

When I put on my light bar, I got a wireing harness like yours. The plugs that are in the spots for the lightbar harness you need to take out and insert into the back of the lightbar harness fuse wireing. I think this adds to the max voltage allowed through the fuse.

I have no idea whats up with the plug in the dash peice. It gave me a new trim peice with a whole cut out of it. I simply incerted the switch and plugged it in.

The wireing harness went through my brake garmet and connected to my battery. If you want a lead from the battery, they are the largest red and black wires in the main harness under the dash...

And have fun drilling holes in the top of your Libby!!! lol

look at the harness that comes from the light bar and see where it runs to inside the cabin,

i am thinking that the connector is somewhere in my loom ang i just gotta find it,

well the relay is in the box under the hood and the fuse is in the fuse box so its gotta be there somewhere

It was all pretty staight-forward. It comes with some crappy instructions, but it is do-able. it took me around 4 hours as i recall, but i worked in a car electronics shop installing stuff for a while. I would figure a good saturday, 4-8 hours. I didn't get any pics.

tips:
1. measure 3 times, line up your light bar, measure again, then drill.
2. use brand new bits and a nice drill, you don't want to punch through your head-liner.
3. pick a good gasket caulk and use it very liberally. I covered every hole and bolt-head.

other than that, good luck! and remember, If you screw it all up, an auto shop can fix it.

i just did something and it didnt fry the KJ ,

i connected up the light bar for a dry run and bugger me,

i used the plug that was behind the dash already on my export kj connected the white wire with the brown stripe from the light bar to the white wire with the brown stripe coming from the back of the mystery plug, then earthed the other one hit the switch and IT FREAKING WORKS I even get the light bar illumination warning in the dash lighting up The BCM recognises it

sooooooooooooo happy :D

Post subject:  FOUND IT

ok for those punters wondering well i found the light bar harness that i knew would be there :)

if you remove the Grab handle trim from the Left hand Side of the KJ at the bottom of the A pillar there is a socket that is being un used

Image

this is the FACTORY wiring harness for the Light Bar

you will also find behind the Trim that goes between the steering wheel and the drivers door a plug like this

Image

the switch that comes with the light bar kit plugs into it like so

Image

from there you connect the harness from the light bar

Image

to the plug as shown in the first picture like so

Image

and your done this is the result

Image

Image

so it looks like all that extra crap that comes with the light bar kit is surplus to requirements , Unless being an export KJ I just got Lucky

does anybody want to check thier Limited or sports to see if you have the same harness in your kj's

now i have to drill holes in my roof

I needed all of the harness peices for the install into my limited. It was completly baren of any pre-installed wiring.

Yes...it is because I have none of the factory wiring in my 03 sport. I have the light bar installed on the roof but I'm trying to get the rest of the wires from the dealer. The fun of buying used...and I thought I would save some money boy was I wrong. I could have bought a new one already from what I bought and I'm still missing some wires. Remember when you drill the holes in the roof use sharp bits and lots of sealer after it's in place.
