| Post subject: | Climate control conversion? |
Has anyone attempted converting the 02 style climate controls to a later style? My 02 has the type that run the AC by default in defrost modes and AC modes and the dial must be run through the AC modes in order to reach the off position. I don't like it. I don't need my compressor running when it's -20° and 10 % humidity out. I bought an 05 control and would like to swap them, they look like they have all the same connections on the back. The newer control has a button for selecting whether the AC runs or not and the dial is arranged differently. Has anyone tried this, will it work? I'd hate to cook the ol BCM over something silly like this. It looks like plug and play to me though, just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask first |

I would think you'd blow a fuse before you cook the BCM. I say give it a whirl. Good luck! |

i SERIOUSLY doubt that there's gonna be a problem. My 95 cherokee made you go through AC modes to get to OFF and it worked flawlessly. |

The conversion works...some people have even covered the connection on the position of the fan to the feet. This by default runs the A/C even with the heat on. Designed to lubricate the system. They have modified it so that it blows only heat without wasting gas with your A/C on. Hope this helps. |

Hmmmm interesting. I've always wanted to run recirculated air without the A/C going. It gets pretty dusty in Uwharrie, but don't really need A/C on all the time. |

Careful with the vaccuum lines in the back that control the vent position. If anything happens to them, you may have difficulty selecting different vent positions. Mine needs to get in for some warranty work on that matter. My vents always default to defrost, and if its cold, they have a tough time switching over to any other position. |

I don't think the '05 controls are going to help you. My '05 automatically turns on the AC compressor in every position except "face and feet" and "face" regardless of the AC button being on or off. That's a big complain that the owners of new ones have too. The only way to fix it is to modify the actual knobs themselves so that they don't trigger the signal for AC compressor as they move across the various settings. Someone on jeepkj.com wrote up a how to article on this. |

Jeesh looks like I'm not going to get a 100% fix real easy. Thanks for the input and especially the link to that discussion of what's already been done and how. I'm waiting for my part to come in the mail then I'll look at those switches and see what I can do. Just getting the newer selector order will make me happier but I'd like to get the compressor to run when I want it to. I'll let ya know how I manage. Thanks again |
