Being some what new to the 4x4 world, what do you consider "basic" equipment / tools you would never find yourselves out on the trail with out. And, are there specific, mandatory safety equipment that each club requires you carry for a club run?

Burchie:

This is a copy of the LOSTKJWEST Safety list. It's the absolute MINIMUM.

L.O.S.T KJ WEST Safety Requirements Checklist

Basic Required Equipment for Each Vehicle on All Runs
(This is a minimum requirements list)

__ Seat Belts for all Occupants

__ Full Size Spare equal to the size on the vehicle (no temporary spares accepted)

__ Jack capable of lifting the vehicle and tool for removing lug nuts and wheel locks

__ Fire Extinguisher with gauge/check valve indicating fully charged

__ Tow Strap or rope rated at minimum 15,000 lbs (chains are discouraged and straps with hooks are unacceptable no exceptions)

__ Tow Attachment points FRONT and REAR with Tow hooks or receiver hitch with shackle (tow balls are unacceptable no exception)

__ 4-wheel drive system with Hi / Lo range transfer case (unless trip description allows 2 wheel drive)

__ Roll Bar or Hard Top

__ Functional parking brake

__ First aid kit (include what you would want when you’re hurt or in pain)

__ A valid drivers license

__ Proof of insurance

At no time will the use of firearms, alcohol or drugs be tolerated on a run
This applies to sanctioned and not sanctioned runs with no exception

LOST KJ West subscribes to the “Tread Lightly” principles. Use of our off-road areas is a privilege that must be protected. Those that choose not to follow the tread lightly principles may not run the trail with LOST KJ West.

I always bring more clothing , 5 gallons of water, a "earthquake kit" ..its a california thing ! ...that consists of food / coast gaurd water / energy bars / MRE's / soap /tarp/flares...on and on...and on...

Hope that helps a little

Some other good things to keep with you when off-roading but not required:

1. Fire Extinguisher
2. Shovel (collapsible is best)
3. CB
4. air compressor
5. basic tool kit (wrenches, hammer, and utility tool such as Gerber/Leatherman)
6. Extra water (gallon should be good - drinkable)
7. Spare blankets
8. Kitty litter or something that can be used when stuck in mud
9. strips of cardboard for same reason as #8
10. wood blocks for use with jack in soft areas
11. tire pressure gauge
12. kitchen sink

Just kidding on #12....checking to see if you made it this far.

You can get a 6' x 6' tarp from HD cheaply. It's REALLY nice to have when you've got to crawl under your Jeep in the mud. It folds so flat, you'll forget you have it!

In an plastic milk crate I carry:

Tool kit
Quart of oil
Assorted bungee cords and some rope
12V compressor and air gauge
Work gloves
Rain poncho
blanket
lighter
paper towels
moist towelettes
zip ties

Also carry a CB, flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, lots of maps and a PA Atlas.

On a ride I take plenty of bottled water and munchies.

Last but not least, a dozen or so LOST flyers to hand out!

toss in a can of fix a flat. I also have traditional flat tire repair stuff. I found rain poncho's for about $1 each!

Flares, etc. Just go down the target or k-mart, and buy all that junk you see. Much of it you'll never use. But if you use one thing once, you'll be glad you had it all.

OH, and zip ties, duct tape! don't forget the duct tape. Hammer.

I also carry plastic rivets and a rivet gun to keep my fenders on when out on the trail. (I tend to stuff the tires hard and have damage on the plastic parts already so it's all kinda loose).

I've got umbrellas, maps, (NAV system too), extra food (animal crackers. But that's for sanity more than survival because I off road with my 5 year old aka The Cookie Monster!).

What else, hmm, good tire psi gauge, CB, extra batteries, camera, cell phone,

And I wonder why my KJ weighs 4,600 lbs with just me and "nothing else" inside!

WoW. Now that's some stuff. Someone needs to come out with a diagram on how to pack your jeep, or invent a kit, with everything a 4x4er would need, in a small durable, weather tight container.
Being In SoCal, and everything so far apart, do you guys carry extra fuel? And if so, how and where is the best place to transport it?
Thanks. I don't want to be a rolling bomb in the forest. Can you say bomb on this forum?

Mark,
I am close by in Eastvale / Mira Loma. I would be happy to show you my setup.

There are several items that go outside of the jeep that you should consider if you will be wheeling as well although many of the items listed are good for the street as well ad for any vehicle.

Later,
J

I have TONS of stuff stuffed under my rear seats. I also have the rear cargo net, which holds the rest neatly.

I also carry a 1" MDF 1'x1' board as a base for my Hi-Lift (under my rear seat too).

And windex, paper towels, mini rolls of toilet paper (can I say toilet? LOL) for emergency use (compliments of the wifey for my son's use), etc.

Here's the net I have. Wow, I haven't seen that thing empty in years!

I HATE having things under my back seat. The only reason is that I have to take it all out if I want to fold the seat(s) down. Drives me NUTS!

If you do not see the need to fold them down then pack away.

I have 2 nets like yours (Adam). One that connects how you have it and another that connects to the front and rear (cargo area) floor 'hooks' and a big net that I connect to the rear headrest posts, the rear clips by the door (that you do not have and which I will be removing when my All J cargo rack is done) and then to the same rear cargo 'hooks' that the other net connects to. I really want that stuff to stay back there if there is an 'incident'.

Uh oh! I just joined you as a junkie!

Later,
J

Instead of netting, I use tie-down straps to keep my tool box and wood in place. The box (plastic) is wedged against the stuff in the net against the rear seat-backs.

For off roading, bungee type cords aren't acceptable since they won't hold a 25lb tool box in place during a rollover.

I have a mini elastic cargo net that I secure my crate of goodies by hooking it to the bars on the back of the rear seats and to the floor loops.

Exterior only! Never ever transport fuel within the interior of a vehicle. Especially when off-roading! No, I don't currently transport fuel. This reply will continue in what we need for our KJ's....

Yes, it is. Was about $20 as I recall. Got it 2 years ago.
