So a couple months ago my high pressure PS hose started leaking. Upon further investigation, I found a pin needle hole in it and every time I turned the wheel, fluid started coming out like crazy.

I typically do repairs on my Jeep on my own, but the hose end looked like it was difficult to get to. Seems like it terminated behind the headlight. I think the repair manual said I had to take the radiator out.

So I decided to take it to a mechanic. A friend said his son manages a shop and said he would give me a good deal. $300 later I got a new hose. OR DID I?

I was doing some random work and my monthly visual inspection of the Jeep and found this. I was told by the shop he was doing to install a replacement Mopar part.

Also they put ATF in it and not PS fluid which is what my manual calls for. 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7L

I don't know on the ATF, but doesn't sound good. They should have at least told you that they just spliced it... Do you have a receipt? I'd want to know if they charged you for a line, but, on the other hand, maybe they saved a ton of labor by not removing the entire front end, and thereby actually saved you a bundle, hmm

The receipt says I got a new line.
He told me I was going to get a new line from the dealer.

I'm sure it would hold up for the life of the vehicle. But I feel like I got jipped.

Is it possible a replacement line came that way?

Oh, I assumed it was a splice, but yeah, I think they do come that way. I'll step out in the garage and look, I just happen to have one with the engine out

I don't see any crimps that go from rubber hose to rubber hose, but, I only have 05's. Looks like you might have received part of that new hose. I think they did you ok, but I've never played with power steering hose splicing. If they didn't use the new hose at all, then you would have been jipped. I think $300 is reasonable.

That was around where the hose was spitting out fluid. How does splicing a hose work? You think the entire hose is new, reusing the hose ends?

Not certain, but they probably just cut the easy to access end off, and spliced on that section. If they used universal hose piece, versus the Chrysler piece they charged you for, that would be shady. Cost them a few bucks, but charge customer OEM price for part. This is why I don't let anyone touch my vehicles, many mechanics are like lawyers, they just can't help themselves from charging more, because they can!
Custody battle estimate from my lawyer, $5-10k. Actual cost, $40k plus they started adding 10% interest!

ImageYou got a new hose. That is not a splice but a crimp to hold a reducer in the hose in place.

Every single aftermarket PS pressure hose I've installed on a KJ has that crimp in the same location.

Also they put ATF in it and not PS fluid which is what my manual calls for. 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7L

That is good to know. Kind of consequence that the was the spot it was leaking from before the repair and now there is a crimp in that same spot.

What do you think of the ATF being mixed with PS fluid. Seems like the system was pretty much drained because the fluid is a very light pink.

There is a TSB to switch all Chryslers regardless of years to ATF+4 for power steering.Mixing the 2 is just fine.
