My radio/head unit is starting to go out. The sound is randomly shutting off from the passenger side.

Any recommendations for a replacement? I'd like to try to find a radio that works with the Liberty Limited steering wheel controls and or has a ipod/mp3 input.

I'm not going with a stock Jeep radio, dealer head units are outrageously expensive.

Thanks

Check out options at Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-A8W9Xsr72sg/). It's been a while so I don't know if there are head units that plug and play to the steering wheel controls but you can get interfaces. I've had good luck with the predecessor to the Axxess ASWC-1 unit.

You might want to check the right side speaker(s) to make sure they are not shot.

As pap said, you may want to check the right front speaker if you have the high end Infinity Sound System! The front speakers have amplifiers attached to the backs of them and it is my understanding that the signals are sent from the head unit to this amp and from there it feeds all other speakers, front, back, tweeters, etc... so if one of the amps in the front door goes out all speakers on that amp's side will quit working!
I learned this when a local car stereo company was replacing both my front speakers with new high end Pioneer speakers and they explained to me how this OEM system works. I did not want to have to replace the head unit and loose all its functionality just to get two new speakers! So, they simply removed the amps from the backs of the OEM speakers and wired the amp's OEM outputs to the new speakers, wrapped the amps in some sound deadening material and attached them to a metal frame inside the door with plastic tie-wraps....been that way for several years now and still working perfect
You may just have a broken wire or the amp is going out on that side!!!

I think that I'll wait until the passenger side stops working all together and then test the audio output from the radio. The way it fades in and out could be the amp but it could be the radio too.

Its more likely that its your speaker cutting out.

And used head units are cheap, I tried for a long time to sell the stock in dash CD changer from the up scale Jeeps for a long time before giving up. These days you could pick one up for under $50 easy.

They do make great adapter boxes to make the controls on the wheel work with an aftermarket HU. I have an Alpine from Crutchfield with Bluetooth, usb/iPod jack and XM in mine for over 2 years. have not had issues with it at all. I had an RB1 with infinity but the speakers needed replaced and the NAV disc wouldn't read anymore so I dumped it for the aftermarket set up..

I'll check tomorrow, the sound finally stopped going on and off and it is now completely off on the passenger side. I hope it's just the wire.

I got the door panel off and I think that I tested the wires correctly, They seem to all have connectivity and power except for the black wires which I assume are ground.

I have a feeling that the amp might be bad.

Anyone know how to test the Infinity speaker? Or have a diagram of what terminal powers this speaker?

Thanks

Have no clue if viewtopic.php?f=45&t=73768&p=771247#p771247 will help. If you want images just email me for Word or PDF copy. In my experience the speakers fail when the foam that attaches the paper speaker to the housing goes belly up.

I'm pretty sure now that it's the amp. I tested the speaker with a 9V battery and the cone still jumps. I might have the dealership test it out, I couldn't find anything on YouTube for testing amp output or connectivity.

Thanks, I might get that amp on ebay. I'll see if the dealership can at least diagnose it. I finally got the air bag recall and it's going in for service tomorrow.

It was the speaker amp. Pain in the booty to diagnose. I had to remove both front speakers and swap them to make sure but I just got the replacement amp in and everything works again.

If I lose 1 more front speaker, I'm doing to the conversion to standard speakers. POS Infinity speakers. :x
